cannon xti vs nikon 40Dx
a picture comparison is not going to tell you much except possibly mislead you.... look at the features the body offers.... the lenses that you use will make more of a difference in image quality... if you plan on using the stock lenses you are probably looking at the wrong cameras.....
I actually just bought a Nikon D80, but a few days before that I had tried the D40. The D40x is practically the same camera as the D40 with the exception of the larger sensor 6 megapixel vs. 10. Overall I liked the ease of use of the Nikon D40 and it was very user friendly. The menu system was excellent and you could retouch photos right on the camera. The Nikon D40x only has 3 focal points vs the Canon XTi has 9. If I were choosing between those 2, I'd probably go with the Canon XTi. Plus the XTi has a sensor cleaner built into the camera whereas the Nikon doesn't. I've heard a lot of great things about the Canon from reading articles or even seeing other member's photos. For me I was deciding between the D80 and the XTi. I bought the Nikon because I liked the body feel better and was impressed that it had 11 focal points. But between the 2 that you listed.... canon is my choice
The image below was taken with the D40 (while I had it)

so is the XTi worth buying?
Used 30D > XTi
if you're willing to buy used. Ergonomics on the Rebel bodies could be better. Small viewfinder, 4 buttons on the back instead of a wheel, small body makes for an uncomfortable grip in your right hand for extended periods (especially with a heavier lens).
sensor cleaner isn't very effective, either.

there is a thread with the same info that I made. I end up buying a D70s for less than the 2 and comparing it to my brothers XTi, it takes better pics. I like my D70s a lot. I haven't gotten a chance to go out and take pics with it because I'm finishing my move and the weather is not helping either,
