Lens Recommendation

Lens Recommendation
Guys,
I need a recomendation for a new lens. I love my IS 28-135, but I need something that will take pictures further away. More specifically, something to take to the track. I simply cannot get close enough to get the pictures I want to take, and out a Pahrump there's nothing but Dirt in the backgrounds.
Not looking to spend a fortune, because this lens really won't benefit me too much, but it'll make my friend happier
Thanks
Stan

budget:
Canon 70 200 f/4.0L
not on a budget
Canon 70 200 f/2.8L IS
Canon 300 f/4.0L IS
Canon 300 f/2.8L IS
add in a 1.4x teleconverter, $100-130
I use a 70 200 f/2.8L IS at the track and I've only used my 1.4x Tamron TC once in the last 3 years. The tracks in my area have photographer areas close enough to the track so a TC isn't required. It'll vary depending on your track set up. 200mm might not have enough reach.

I saw not on a budget and saw a bunch of ISs at the end. I'm afraid to even look them up. I'll look into them as well as the TC. 2x7 TC?

I would wait for the EF-S 55-250 IS which should be available for $250 or less soon. It's the sister lens to the EF-S 18-55 IS. It's a nice budget lens from what I've read. Unfortunately, it'll be only available outside the US. But I'm sure B&H will offer it as an import/gray market soon.

a Mennonite church in this area sponsored our family and helped us make the transition from Vietnam to America, so this is how we ended up in Lancaster, PA.

If your going to be using this lens at a track you should get something that will go 400mm. I use my 200mm lens all the time at tracks and is never good enough. I guess it depends how close you are to the action.

Remember, this will be on a cropped sensor as it is a EF-S lens and it's equivalent to 88-400mm on a full frame sensor.

Istan, check out the Flickr 55-250mm IS pool:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/canon55-250is/pool/
The results are remarkable for such a cheap starter lens. Of note is the pics taken of the harp player in concert.
And check this out, it's not even cropped. Narrow depth of field at 225mm on 400D (XTi) at f/5.6 and at just 1/13 sec. I'm wondering if this was handheld.
Here's the link to the full size pic.:
