so i have been playing around with the photomatix program, and doing some pseudo HDT images, and i guess i really need to ask a more basic question...

what makes for a good HDRI? i mean, as in qualities of a photo. most of mine come out looking (IMO) worse than the original, either too washed out, too dark, colors look askew, not the deep rich colors like in the examples of HDRI that i see... so what would be some qualities of a picture for an HDR project?

i can try to save some of the ones i have been playing with and hosting them tomorow, but its pretty discouraging

also, will doing the conversion with multiple exposures rather than adjusting the raw files produce better results? or will it be pretty negligible?

 

dude learn to take a good pic (exposer, aperture, lighting, color balance, etc..) first before you start messing with hdr. Basically learn to crawl before you can walk. Wht ur basically doing is taking $hit on a stick and adding colorful bright stars too it.

P.S: take this as constructive criticism,instead of you thinking I'm trying to make fun of you.

i prefer subtle and small accentuation's to bring out minor detail, and contrast it a bit more. C&C appreciated seeing as how i've only ever done 5 HDR's in my life time. Was done as a 5 exposure HDR, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2.

 

what programs were you using? i still cant get good contrast and rich colors to come out of mine like that . i like yours

mine keep coming out a bit dark, the colors lighten slightly, but overall the pictures just darken.

Be sure to use the photomatix online tutorial if you get the program...its only 100$. I got mine from Anderson...so

The Tutorial will walk you thru the process and those are my first two attempts. The first image is one raw image that was post processed in CS3 to have three different exposures and then I loaded it into the batch processing application in photomatix. The first shot is also VERY LIGHT on the intensity of HDR, I used it to make the brick POP out, if it wouldnt have been foggy the cloud cover would have looked amazing. The second shot is actually three different bracketed exposures via my D100. This shot I wanted to look a bit MORE HDR than the other and its still LIGHT in comparision as I prefer a REAL looking image for the shots I take. Anderson achieves an aura effect with his images which is not only timeless but almost limitless in its color spectrum as well as the tonal depth, something that can be achieved thru BRACKETED images and GOOD pictures.

It also explains how to achieve High Dynamic Range with single shots/exposures(if you cannot bracket shots).

Hope that helps guys...Anderson was in town recently so he showed me which programs to use, mine dont have the color depth that he has but its a preference thing . Make what you THINK looks good and what LOOKS GOOD to you.

^^ i like the HDR effect on the clouds and sky, but im willing to bet the rail, trees on the left, and bridge look better on the original image.

i also absolutly hate the unlevel picture. would probably be pretty good if it wasnt ruined by that.

well, you peaked my interest, so I took a old photo and just made a copy of it where I adjusted the brightness and colors a tad and then generated a HDR from it, just to see what would happen. pretty neat stuff! even with my cheating.

ive been trying out hdr but its really hard for me to make it look even half as good as the pictures you guys posted. lol. i need more practice.. any advice??
