Still trying to get better... here's what I've done in the past week or two...

 

Not bad. Shooting with a 50mm? If that bee shot would have been a macro... i would have been a winner.

BTW, don't be afraid to crop your pics and delete static stuff, dead space; unless you want it that spacious; ie: the dog shot.

The secret is to getting better is to keep trying new things, and try to copy a shot you like; like the angle and framing of the pic. You'll find how the focal length, aperture, and positioning of the camera affects a shot... which really affects car pics and make that same car look totally different from shot to shot. That's what I did

 

Great pictures, the pictures of the Z are so clear I can see all the dirtiness in the front bumper!

 

Any naked pics of women???? Seems that just about any hoe will peel off her clothes for a camera & just the right lies.

Yeah I just got the 50mm f1.8 to play with.... so far I love it.... really decent lens for super cheap...

The bee shot..... I have a question.... let's say I had the 100mm f2.8 macro lens... how far away could I have been and still filled the shot? Conversely, what is the min focal distance? It's the next lens I am considering...

I wanted it there... I try not to crop unless it's necessary. Usually I do my best to compose the shot the way I want it to look without cropping, but sometimes it's necessary/best to crop, I agree.

Good advice...and I really need to do more of that.. to be honest I was reading one of your posts last saturday night and it's what got me motivated to go downtown and take some pictures of the clean car.... so thanks for that!

lol thanks for noticing! my front bumper is a war zone... it's been hit with an open end wrench, a 5 foot piece of rubber.... and tons of rocks... at highway speeds.... it has the surface properties of 80 grit sand paper lol... last time i detailed the car I didn't even touch the bumper.... and those pictures show it bad...

Filled the shot with the bee? Depends how close you can get to the bee without scaring it off. All true macros achieve 1:1 maginification. 1:1 maginification is a ratio of the real size of the subject in relation to the sensor size. The cropped sensors on Canon bodies is 22.2mm x 14.8mm.



Draw a rectangle that is 22mm x 14mm on paper and put the bee (or imagine the real bee's size) in that rectangle... that's the biggest the subject can be within your frame, with the rectangle you drew representing the frame.

The 100mm Macro will do 1:1 magnification at 12 inches, which is the minimum focusing distance. This distance is usually the distance from the sensor to the subject, not the front element (glass) of the lens, so good luck getting that close to the bee without scaring it off.

For my bee shots, the front of the lens only a couple inches away... you have to be quick. I'm surprised I didn't get stung.

I was reading up on extension tubes, and it may be cheaper to do macros with them without sacrificing IQ. I allows you to cut down the minimum focusing distance on most EF lenses, but you'll lose Auto Focus. I've seen some awesome macros in PopPhoto Magazine with this dude just using the 50 f/1.8 and extension tubes.

If you do get the macro, you'll be amazed at the thin Depth of field when you do close focus and large aperture shots.
