Default a whole week... how much can i improve

well i pretty much got ahold of my friends Canon rebel XT for this whole week.

have 2 lense:
18-55mm
75-300mm
tri pod

looking for any tips u guys might have, techniques i should try. Ill be going to another drift event this weekend to practice action shots too.

ps today i have to take my friend to court, so i'll have a 1hr or so to mess around and do a lil photo shoot that i will post up in here.

I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to unlock the full potential of this camera. Also l8tr this week i will do a side by side comparison with a Sony ax100.

you have the potential as a photographer...not the camera.....just keep shooting and post up your work, and we'll give you some C&C

Do you really know what you're doing? It's kind of hard to hate something that you don't know how to use.

Post the pics... BTW, it's rarely the camera. A better body just allows for faster frame rates, more buttons, more resolution,... but the core photo stays the same.

What do you hate about it?

The Rebel is a great camera. Did you expect your photos to look as good as in the magazines? cuz.... that takes a bunch of experience, plenty of lights and light knowledge to pull off.

You got some strange ISO settings.. why are you using ISO 400 or even ISO 800 (in a few pics) in the day time? This should always be as low as possible

Try framing your car differently.. it doesn't always have to be in the middle of the picture and it doesn't always have to be a 3/4 view of the car

One thing I noticed in these pictures is a lack of attention to detail.. you got some good ideas but are a little sloppy in the execution.. like #2 .. why is that big AC unit on top of the car? a definate distraction.. that plain long brick wall on the right looked ieal however
#3 the pole and the car in the corner.. why did you include those in the picture? The reflections on the hood from the pole are distracting too.. a polarizing filter might nelp here.
#4 the wheel is turned slightly the wrong way.. one general rule about car photography is to show the wheel face and not the tire tread.. it makes the car look more aggressive
#5 try to shoot with the sun behind you otherwise your sky's get blown out sometimes you get lens flare
#6 compositon doesn't look very exciting.. everything is just in the middle like a snapshot..
#9 see #6...
#11 why is the logo tilted? more careful planning needed here
#12 good idea but it looks like you missed the focus.

Your car looks dirty in many of the pictures as well.. clean your car! When you take the time to make the photos "perfect" other people notice too..

Read this,

https://my350z.com/forum/photography/232538-the-official-digital-photography-101-thread.html

It will help.

Also be aware of reflections. The fist one is pretty bad with your or a guys refelction in it.

I don't like shooting car in the middle of the day. It will over expose your picture in the lighted area and kill your shadows. Best method is to use the sun at sunrise or sunset.

Face the car towards the camera and inward (not always, depending on your type of shot).

Be aware of what is behind the car, in relation to your picture. You don't want a tree, pole, etc growing out on top of the car.

Close your windows. It makes the car look cleaner and slimmer.

This is my rule. Always shoot with the camera on a tri pod and at the lowest ISO setting possible. I shoot with the ISO at the lowest setting possible even in the dark for still object.

Take the camera out of the "AUTO" setting and user "PROGRAM" or "P" at a minimum. If you really want to learn how to use a camera, put it on "MANUAL" or "M".

If you are taking a picture that the object is on a shadow (like under a tree) use the flash as fill in. Other than that I try to never use the flash. If it is dark, I rather "light paint" than use the built-in flash.

wow thanks for all the tips guys...

srry wasn't even paying attention to the ISO.. have changed that now
and i never use auto setting... I had it mostly set to Av and Tv, then switching over to P for a few.

One big problem with the shots... it was middle of the day and i was waiting for my friend to get out of court, wasnt really a planned shoot, was just killing time.

I'll try out a few of these tips shortly. I might try and do some night shooting tonight.

thanks everyone... more coming soon.

BTW alot of those pics aren't loading for me in the Photo thread...
