Default Digital Cameras

I have been looking into getting a good digital camera for about a month now...

I was set on the Sony Cybershot 5.0 Megapixle DSC-P10, but i recnetly talked to some one who knows quite abit about digital photography and he recommend i lookinto Nikon and other such brands.

First of all the sony is a good deal at 399 plus 99 for a 256MB memory card.

Sony also makes 2 differnt 256MB memory cards...the regural Memory stick and the Memory Stick PRO??? Can someone help me out there.

What do you all think i should do?

Are there any cameras that you all recommend for an ameture who wants high res photots.

Thanks

It's all about transfer rates - the pro is able to store images faster than the regular memory stick. Both are good, but if you want to take pictures faster go with the PRO.

I'll add my vote for the sony. In my experience, sony generally makes very good products. I have a DCS-S85 and I am extremly happy with it.

Choosing a camera will really depend on what you want to do i.e. just holiday pictures with your family, camping trips where the camera will be exposed to weather elements, something for the art class you are taking etc.

I am not a professional and I don't claim to be a camera gury, but that DSC-P10 looks like a damn nice camera to me. You also can get that marine pack and take pictures under water - don't know how well it will work but it looks like it could be a very cool thing to have.

just my .02

P.S. If you want more choices I would check out Crutchfield. I know people complain that their prices are too high. I bought thousands of dollars worth of equippment form them over the years (literally). Their prices might be slightly high but their customer service is absolutely top notch always.

I think your friend was talking about Nikon coolpix series, which isn't bad, but isn't as compact or have as nice of option as the P10. I would put my money on the P10.

I just bought that exact Sony Digi and I suggest you do the same. I've looked into others brands such as the Cannon but it was $100 more than the Sony. It is very compact, lightweight and easy to use. It only comes with a 32MB memory stick so I bought a 256 for 99 and the accesorries kit for 79 which includes an extra battery, case and memory stick case holder. I'm very satisfied with it and you can't go wrong with Sony.

I also bought the Sony p10, and I really like it. I've had a few digital cameras including canon, fuji, and olympus. So far, the p10 is the best one. Definitely buy an extra battery and a 256 memory stick. I didn't buy the memory stick pro but the memory stick select because is compatible with the other sony gadgets I have. I also read somewhere that the faster transfer rates with the pro are not supported in this camera. If you can afford it I would get the Sony DSC-V1, if you can find a good price.

I've got an older Sony P1 and I'm still waiting for digital cams to start using bluetooth. Tired of having to plug cables in.

An excellent site for reviews and user comments (forums) on digital cameras, see www.dpreview.com. The reviews on the camera are very in-depth and should help make a decision easier. An added bonus is that they show actual pictures taken with a particular camera... check it out.

Enjoy,
