GODDAMN IT. I shoulda seen this coming. With the rebates on the 40D and 5D... I'm expecting Canon to put out a D700 killer.
The 18-200 IS is gonna be definitely on my short list too.
Anybody want to buy my 40D?
Looks like Canon is waking up from the latest Nikon Salvos...
50D...
15.1 Megapixel
ISO 100-3200, expandable to 12800
DIGIC 4 processor
Count me in at launch.

Putting my foot into the Olympus line with the e-520, I have learned that Olympus are the true innovators as far as features... introducing things such as self-cleaning sensors and "live view" on DSLRs.
Well, the new 50D is going to have face detect in live-view, introduced by Olympus with the e-520. Super helpful when shooting portraits to ensure focus on all faces in the shot.
Also, HERE'S THE KICKER:
AF microadjust • +/- 20 steps
• Adjust all lenses by same amount/individually adjust up to 20 lenses
NO MORE BTICHING ABOUT SLIGHT FRONT OR REAR FOCUS ISSUES
Man, just reading the specs, I'm just salivating for this.

When you think about it, they might be able to make more money out of it...I don't know what IS in lens does to increase the price, but no one says they have to reduce the price of any higher end non IS lenses by what IS actually cost...

I don't think I'll be "upgrading" to a 50D, unless someone gives me one.
I didn't go from an XT to an XTi, and I don't intend on going from a 40D to a 50D. My next body will be a 60+D or 5D mkII. If I get a 50D now, then it's only going to be replaced by a 60D months later. I'm doing fine with my 40D as is, so I don't really see a point in "upgrading" bodies when I can spend the money (that I don't have, LOL) on glass, strobes, etc., which will ultimately do more for my pictures than the 50D will.
Obviously the 50D is a huge improvement over the 40D, but if you can't take good pictures with a 40D, then the 50D is not the answer.
If you're coming from a Rebel series body and want to upgrade bodies, then the 50D would be a great choice.
If I didn't plan on going full frame, then maybe I'd consider the 50D, but not at it's release price. But I'd still rather wait for the 60+D. As quickly as technology advances, it's stupid to try to stay current with the most recent model, IMO.

Moments only happen once. The sickest feeling is not having the tool to capture it the way you want. The high ISO settings will allow so much more creativity also. It can speed up your shutter... again, allows you to have more DOF in low light, or even still, have fast shutter in low light combined with wide aperture. The 50D will allow you to do so much more, without the noise issues... Canons answer to the D300.
You can also calibrate your lenses to your body, if the focus issues are consistent across the focal range.
The positives just offer too much for me. If the 60D offers a huge leap, I'll upgrade again.
What's great about photography, is gear retains value much more than other electronics.
I have yet to use anything above ISO 1600 on my 40D thus far, and even then I was only messing around. However, that is the one thing that I was thinking about when I was writing my post. The ISO did come to mind. And if you need it, then so be it.
While I would love to have the higher ISO, I won't be upgrading from my 40D for this.
The one feature you haven't mentioned ct is the new LCD on the back with much better resolution. That's really what I would love to have for on the spot reviews, but no matter. Honestly, 15mp is overshooting things for me, at least for now.
