Default Camera Suggestions?

I’m looking to pick up another DSLR. I currently own a Nikon D50 with a couple of lens but I’d like to upgrade. I've looked at the D40 and D70. I've read a couple of reviews were they speak very highly of the D40. I have yet to research Canons. Any suggestions? Please also post why.

unless you are unhappy with the user interface there is generally no good reason to switch between the brands once you've already got a bunch of lenses. The camera's are pretty comparable.
I'm a Canon guy so someone please correct me if I'm wrong but the D40 isn't much of an upgrade from the D50. If i remember right it was a pretty similar camera just a bunch cheaper. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/. Do you have a price range you're looking at? The D60 or D90 would be more of an upgrade, but i'd rather get a used d200 then shell out the cash for one of the newer lower end ones if you can deal with the size / weight.

What's your budget? Also, why do you want to upgrade? Is the current body not cutting it for how you like to take pictures?

Scott Kelby just tested a D-5000 (you can read a bit about it here: http://www.scottkelby.com/) and was quite happy with it.

I wanted something that is a bit newer, easier interface things like that. My current d50 is a pain to find even how to change the f-stops (I know I’m not describing that correctly). I’ve also heard that some Canons have a "bracketing" set up where it automatically take 3 different pictures simultaneously (for HDR pics) which my current D50 doesn't do. As far as price range id like to keep it below the thousand range. I’m not pulling jobs to justify a 3k camera at this moment.

I do understand that keeping it in the family (Nikon) will allow me to reuse my lens. Besides my 55-200mm lens the other is just a kit lens.

Another reasoning for me considering a change is for a slightly lighter camera for rig photos.

I hope this helps on what I’m looking for. I also hope it makes sense I’m a bit sleep deprived.

Thanks

i'll chime in. i have a d40. you cant do the bracketing for hdr on the d40, you have to manually go in and change the exposure and take 3 different pictures. the lenses you have also wont auto focus with the d40 unless they are af-s lenses. i love my camera but if i had to do it again i would go the canon route because lenses are cheaper and more plentiful. another thing i like about the canon dslrs is they have more metering zones than the d40. i wouldn't say a d40 would be much of an upgrade. the d40 really just kind of took over the place of nikons entry level dslr... the only thing you'll get is a bigger clearer lcd screen and a slightly smaller body.

I have a D60... i love it. It does everything i need and then some. It is a total entry level camera and I've learned a lot from using it. I took some great shots with the Kit Lens it came with but with a better lens, i'm sure i can obtain better quality photos. I'm at the point where an upgrade is on my mind and since it was a beginner camera, it's time for me to move to the up and up. i suggest moving up to a mid-level camera and not to another entry level camera... personally, i will be moving up to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II w/ HD video recording. Now you must be wondering, "why not the D90? that one has HD video recording." The 5D MKII has a far superior video quality of the D90 and the D90 is still considered an "entry level camera".... er, DSLR. It's pretty much a D60 with Video enabled. The D60 and the D40 are very similar and if you REALLY had to come to it, i'd save up for the D90 or D5000... oh, and since i'm going Canon... i'm still going to use Nikon lenses and 3rd party ones because Canon lenses suck *****! haha... go read about the EOS 5D MKII on the 5D forums and see what most people are using... Nikon =)

why not save up for a 5D MKII? You won't regret it...

well I can give you my opinion on Canon camera's if you'd like but I don't specifically know their nikon equivalents. My first Canon was a XT and I loved it. I then upgraded to an XTI and realised that upgrading to newer version of the same camera is generally not worth it. I've still got my XTI and i've also picked up a 40D that I love. It's a little heavier which i find a plus unless I'm taking it somewhere where I have to walk a lot with it. I thought about upgrading to a 5D (mark I, sorry not enough money for the Mark II) but half of my lenses wouldn't work on a full frame sensor so I decided to stick with a crop sensor.
@definitionxmk 5d MKII is a really awesome camera but you recommended a camera that's 3 times his budget and none of his lenses will work with.

Many people here seem to have Canon cameras. Any reasoning why you went for that initially?

The one complaint that I do hear about Canons is that the lenses "suck." Never owning one myself I don't really know why can anyone elaborate?

I've never owned a Nikon but I don't have any problems with Canon Lenses and I've never heard that they suck. I initially went with Canon because there's more availability for used equipment.
