Well, we didn't get much response on time/location to meet, so let's just say 8 am in the far reaches of the Target parking lot in Colorado Mills (on the south side of Colfax, just east of I-70.)

I'll post up a proposed route for the drive later this weekend.

(I've already posted a link to this thread at 350ZMotoring to let more of that group know about this drive, so hopefully some of that group will pop over and take a look.)

Default Proposed route information

According to CDOT, there are some repaving projects on 2 stretches of US40 between Winter Park and Kremmling (the traditional route to Steamboat.) I'm thinking we'll want to avoid that, as any traffic backups or bumpy, half-paved roads will be bad news for a group of Zs looking to enjoy the mountains.

However, a slightly longer (though probably more enjoyable) route would be to take I-70 out to Wolcott (past Vail,) and take 131 north to Toponas. From here, we can continue up 131 to Steamboat, or we can take 134 over Gore Pass to US40 (past the repaving projects,) and head north from there into Steamboat.

For the return trip, we can drive back the way we came, or we can consider taking 14 up through Walden, continuing through the Poudre Canyon before we hit I-25 north of Fort Collins. I've never driven this particular road, so maybe someone else here who has can chime in on whether this would be a good road to take (and maybe also an idea on how long it takes to get from Steamboat to I-25 this way.)

This entire route is open for discussion, and I'm curious if anyone else has any thoughts on this or any other way to get up to Steamboat. This should be a collaborative planning process, so feel free to post up if you have any preferences on fun roads to take between Denver and Steamboat.

Sweet I'm in for the drive, but I think that I will actually spend the night up there and head back on Sunday. I haven't been to Steamboat in such a long time, when I was a little kid all those years ago. I think that Steamboat is such a cool town that it's worth staying more than a few hours. I'm bringing the girlfriend so I won't be by myself, but If anyone else wants to stay up there too that would be awesome.

Do we have a final headcount?

See you guys Saturday.
David

I’m most definitely in… My girlfriend will be coming also, but she made plans for us late Saturday night (Star Wars III) so we will be heading back to Denver the same day.

As for the path to take to and from Steamboat, sorry I can’t suggest anything. I have never been there and I have no idea what the roads are like. I do have a book at home (at least I think I still have it) that lists scenic Colorado drives. I will check it and see if Steamboat is mentioned and determine what scenic drives are listed for the area.

All,

I was just drinving to Granby last week and have an update on US 40. There is some paving at the very bottom of Berthod Pass on the I-70 side of the pass. The road is a little rough, but not that bad, at least not for the Z's. It lasts for about 1 mile of that trek. I don't have any issues with going that way.

I however do like your idea Gary about the other route that you suggested. Biggest reason is I have never driven that path as way to Steamboat. My opinion would be to try that way as way of going to Steamboat. As far as the return trip, we have actually done the drive from Ft. Collins to Wolcott before, but we cut off and headed towards Grand Lake. My vote would be to take that way home as I have never been on that road between Wolcott and Muddy Pass, and if we are that close to Muddy Pass I better drive over it, I was named after that pass.......jk.

Well you have my 2 cents. I love Berthod Pass, but almost all of us have been over it multiple times, I for one would like to try some new roads. Lets see what others think. I will see everyone Sat. morning bright and early.

I'm in, but I might be in with "Bottom" and stay the night with my wifey. I'll have to work out boarding for my dog. On the same note, If we leave @ 8am, and I don't spend the night, what time-ish could we expect to be back in Denver?
Peace, Burn

I wouldn't think any later then 8pm......maybe 10pm if we stopped for dinner.

We took a very scenic drive as a group to Aspen a few years back, stopped for lunch and for dinner and for quite a few photo ops and still were back in Denver by 8pm.

FWIW

The majority of the ride between Steamboat and Walden are long stretches of straight roads, but it could also have possibilities for some of those great pics with a mountain backdrop.

Shogun,

Hey thanks for the welcome. I will be comeing down from Cheyenne. What time do you figure I would have to leave from here to make it down there? I am guessing around 6:00-6:15 am. Not familar with the area. I have had my car officially for a month now and love it. See you guys on Saturday.

I've been to Cheyenne a few times and I think it is about two hours to get there from where we're meeting. Note that I-25 from Ft Collins to Denver moves pretty fast, unless there's an accident/construction/cop/cow/ or anything that makes people stop to look. I want to say that average speed is over 85 mph even though it's 75 mph limit, but of course I know we never speed . So I think that 2 hours is plenty of time to make it. We usualy don't leave at the posted time anyway.

I'll be there for sure and I'll have my cell on me. PM me if you want my number just in case.

Blue_pen - I agree with what Bottom said about the commute time from Cheyenne. I would really hope that 2 hours at that time of the morning would be enough time. And like Bottom mentioned, it will probably be a few minutes after 8 by the time we actually get on the road.

To find the meeting place, you'll want to take I-25 south to I-76 West. I-76 will merge with I-70, and you'll continue following it for several miles until you get to the Denver West exit. Take the exit, and turn left at the light to go south on Denver West. You'll soon cross Colfax (still on Denver West,) and after this you'll want to take a right at the first light past Colfax, up into the Colorado Mills parking lot. Target will be on your left, and we'll probably be meeting within sight of the access road that you'll turn off of Denver West onto.

Let's get some kind of count for who's going, so we'll know when everybody's shown up at the meeting place. So far, it looks like:

- GaryM05
- Mudd
- Fizz2
- Blue_pen
- Juztin (maybe)
- hr2burn
- Shogun (maybe)
- dkmura
- Bottom
- possibly one or two others from 350ZMotoring

Anybody else?

Take a look at Post #25. We may not finalize until we meet that morning exactly how we'll go, but my preference would be to go out I-70 and then take 131 from Wolcott to Toponas, then 134 over to 40, and 40 up to Steamboat. How far back do you think you'll be?
