No, I will not be installing these myself. I will be paying the nice people at Altered Atmosphere to install it, hopefully this weekend.

Are you going to run a lower running height? If so How much? That will looks so much better and the tire will fill the wheelwells so much better!

Nothing drastic. An inch, maybe alittle more. I already have issues with some speed bumps around here.

That is funny that you said that. I had a long talk with David last night about that very topic and I can see both sides of this debate. I had JIC coilovers on one of my previous cars and the spring rates that they chose were very poorly matched from front to rear. When setup per the supplied instructions, the front would go through ~1/3 of its travel while going over a medium-sized bump, where as the rear would hit the bump stops. I was able to correct this by adding a significant amount of preload to the rear springs to balance it out.

That experience makes me a little leery of setups with little to no adjustment. In the case of my previous JICs I would have been really disappointed by the change in handling if I wasn't able to make a few adjustments and correct the situation. Now if you can find a set of springs that are well matched the need to adjust spring preload isn't a necessity.

FYI - David's setup consisted of Nitto NT01 tires (245 on each corner), Nismo S-tune sway bars, Koni 8241 series shocks, Eibach Pro kit lowering springs, and an aggressive alignment. At first glance I was pretty skeptical about this setup in comparison to coilovers and adjustable sway bars. My personal experience was saying that the odds were stacked against it working well. When we were at Pueblo Motorsports Park, I had a chance to drive David's car and I was really impressed by the change in driving dynamics over my Z. The front end turned in nicely and the chassis had nice stability through out the turn. Even through the rough sections like Turn 10. Where as my Z with its stock suspension had a case of terminal understeer and wallowed through bumps in Turn 10.

I'm all for the best bang for the buck. Especially if I can improve the handling that drastically for significantly less money and setup effort than what is required of fully adjustable coilovers.

As for the Tein basics, I'd really like to get a personal review from Devildog after he has them installed. I hope that they meet all of your expectations and congrats on the new setup!

The Tein setup has been installed. First impression is that I really like it. It gave the car a new feel. It dropped the ride height about an inch and a half which gives the car a nice look. The only problem so far is that some parking garages are not made for cars that low..... While I was at Altered Atmosphere I also ordered some Volk SF-Challenges to complete the car. 12 WEEKS to get them in!! I can't wait. I will post some pictures when I get a chance.

I’ve had every setup known to man on three very different cars as well, so a lecture on what’s good and not as good would be silly. I simply was referring to the fact that a 20 year experienced racer has skipped on the coilovers (they cost you more points in class racing, bad bad bad) and gone with a spring and shock setup he feels is very balanced for the Z. Now I’m no pro racer, but id tend to think that if someone with that sort of experience is willing to skip the coilovers id be interested to hear why. Coilovers are expensive, and the only real addition you get is the adjustment. If there is a cheaper setup out there that doesn’t need adjustment and works just as well, wouldn’t you see that as the preferred option? Or how bout the white konis, those you can adjust and they are still cheaper, and you didn’t have to buy coilovers, or if you want, later, you can buy some sleeve coilovers. Im rather excited to hear dogs thoughts on these suckers since I’ve heard a couple of mixed reviews but mostly rave reviews of the tein setup he has selected and when still trying to make up my mind over a shock/spring setup its intresteing to hear another CO guys thoughts. Oh, and trust me, i love the idea of coilovers, I’m a sucker for that in car adjustment, i wanted the JICs for a long while, I’ve had the flex's before. But when thinking about the cash, i knew there were better things i could do with my money that would be more productive on a track. I think one thing the CO group has started to do more and more is think about what mods will help most on the track for the lowest reasonable dollar. Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s sort of beyond the realm of what you’re thinking. I don’t know if your ace or not and I’m not trying to say you dont understand that thinking but it’s just something to keep in mind when joining the southwest forum since that’s’ pretty big with us gear heads right now! Be well, thanks for your thoughts and hope your enjoying the nice weather! Let us know how it turns out devildog!

Oh and by the way, coilovers allow height change, not dampening. The shock handles that which you can buy without a coilover spring. I know you understand this I just wanted to clarify your post for those that don’t know the difference. The coilover spring is not the force of the rebound simply the height (and preload which can also effect ride). The force of the rebound is handled entirely on the shock, the in car adjustment systems have a motor that just turns the adjustment **** from in car. For example you can’t adjust height on a coilover setup while driving, have to take everything off (or mostly off) and adjust the collar. If you want height control from in car you need to go to an airbag setup (or extremely expensive airshock setup)
I actually think that same way: What will help the most for the least reasonable dollar. Especially with the Z, where aftermarkets parts are extremely overpriced and there are companies that do offer a quality competitive product for your post, and you got some really good insight between the two and explained the coilover option quite well. With the way the Z's suspension is designed, I can see your reasoning.

Im also looking forward to Devildog's installed pics. Im a sucker for dropped cars.
