You #'s look way better than what I had done in Denver which is around the same elevation as albuquerque. But to be fair my very old N/A dyno was on my old '03 350z. It had Nismo S Tune cams, an exhaust, CAI, pulleys, plenum, and headers. At that time it dyno'd on a dynojet at 220 HP SAE and about 180 uncorrected. That was untuned at the time back then as there was not a EMS solution back then lol (well except for an SAFC2 or E-Manage, yes that far back in Z modding). When I added a greddy 18g TT kit and 11.6psi WG springs and a Utec tune, the power jumped to 525 SAE whp & 532wtq on the same dyno on 91 octane, only part at the time I lost was the headers and CAI due to being replaced by TT kit parts. Old vid of the exhaust testing:

Granted your's is an HR (VQ35DE vs VQ35HR), but it doesn't sound like you've got some big engine breather mods like headers, cam set, potential plenum in the HR, and my experience with NA Z's has always been, don't expect a lot (unless you go big n/a cam + headers + heads + very high compression + balanced exhaust). I could without a doubt feel the difference with my setup vs a stock 350z or lightly modded, and would pull easily on stock Z's in a highway run back in those days.

I'd say 250-260 correct HP sounds pretty good for the exhaust and a tune in my book for the 505 area code. The money at the time I spent on those NA mods and labor I could of purchased one of the cheaper single turbo kits now days, which would net MUCH better results especially at altitude even at like 4psi. I've taken my old 500+ whp & 500+ wtq 350's up the Denver Rockies on roads between 6k & 14k feet, and the power gets ABSOLUTELY ROBBED BIG TIME, the cars would feel like they dropped 3 cylinders or something drastic. So don't underestimate altitude, it hurts FI cars just as much as N/A, but even more so N/A. I think that's decent power definitely for a tune and some light mods. Granted though I would not compare your dyno's against sea level guys, there's always been a big discrepency in my experience. Maybe check with Motiva to see if they have any previous dyno's of 350z/G35 customers that were N/A and HR blocks? Or if you go to another dyno, compare against other HR 350z's that ran on the same dyno, there's typically a difference between dyno's, and other things like the conditions when you run (hot or cold, humidity blah blah) all effect the #'s. You'll dyno higher now that it's typically cold for winter, and expect a dip in summer heat, especially when it hits like 100 in Abq.

Also another effective way if you can, simply run (in safe settings of course) a stock HR if you know someone that has one and that can give you an idea in the difference in performance. I wouldn't worry over the N/A gains & keep up the mods and just enjoy 'em as long as the butt dyno approves!

Some guys in your other thread were saying to run a 1/4 mile and look for the 108-109 mph trap, I'd say ignore that. We are at altitude, if you were boosted I would say you could expect that kind of trap speed depending on your setup and power, but you are without a doubt running a lot less power up here at altitude then folks at sea level or at even 3k feet elevation with a setup the same as yours. But I wouldn't doubt you are faster than stock Z's in this area, if that turned out to be untrue, I would then suspect the tune/mod combination and power readings. If you have about a 18hp bump or however someone else on that thread reached that number, you could expect to pull on the other car by about 1.5 - 2 car lengths.

Juztin, thanks for that reply - I really appreciate it

I'd love to boost my Z. It's just a whole lot of money & commitment that I don't have at the moment, but it's always a possibility for the future

Trust me man, while it may be fun, typically most of the time boosted Z's have issues causing lack of ability to drive them on the weekends or when you want, mine included (its been in the shop now 3+ months, giving me time to accumulate a lot of boxes and junk where it used to sit in the garage). NA certainly has its pro's, nothing quite just like starting and cruising, and not worrying, how far, how long, will my car make it thru the cruise lol That's why you end up seeing a lot of people sell 'em, don't want to deal with the issues after they start to hit fairly regularly.

I'd say try some headers as well, not a very big cost in comparison to other more hardcore NA mods, and if you can sometime, a cam is always great and a sure power gain, but are a major pain in the *** to install so you can expect some heavy labor costs (probably double the cost of the cam to be realistic, but both of those mod's would probably also benefit from a re-tune. I know in the past NA exhausts used to be kinda fickle, if you went too open exhaust/header/no cats that pretty much negates back pressure and it would actually hurt the power, but a balanced exhaust would be great, probably just due to the lack of ability to tune them back in those days that I had experiences in it. I'd be awesome to have a 4.x L stroker motor NA with as high of a CR as you could get away with 91 octane in Alb, would probably put out some solid 330+ hp which would be comparable to a SC or turbo Z at altitude on stock kit boost settings :O

Ah, gotcha. Thank you for your service

When you're in Albuquerque we'll have to meet up sometime. Racing Southwest will be hosting a really fun cruise to Jemez (~300 or so cars?) - it's a lot of fun

Is there such thing as a really conservative tune/low boost to avoid that? Or regardless of how much boost you're running, will you always deal with those sort of issues? It seems like that's torture to have it MIA while being repaired in the shop all the time

Sure run a stock turbo/SC kit power without ever changing the psi and have a solid/conservative tune and you should be good to go without reliability issues as far as the motor goes.

FI can be as reliable as NA but you really have to understand what your getting into.
Most people will go for an off the shelf kit that will give you great horsepower, empty your wallet, then blow up down the road. Then those that piece a kit together get decent hp, not such a heavy hit, then blow up down the road hahahaha. Take time and define your hp expectations and appropriate FI that you would be able to meet those goals. In any FI set-up the bulk of cost is associated with labor. Take the time piece the kit together, work with somebody that knows FI and can help/teach with the install, upkeep, and tuning.

I think I pieced my complete turbo kit together for just under $1,500. All new parts and No ebay junk. You just have to look.

yeah mine's a DE but I scrapped my turbo build because Im trying to sell the car. I actually just sold my turbo last week, last piece to go. To be honest you can probably source a kit out for about the same price. The only thing is if you decide to go that route don't flip-flop pick your set-up and stick with it. Like a lot of people say do your research, and ask a lot of questions.

Aww, too bad you're trying to sell the car. The RSW Jemez trip is slowly approaching

What are you looking to get next?
