Yeah, i've had a potato bug in my garage before, i kinda freaked out too.
harmless to you, but they eat other bugs so just stick that thing back out in the yard, it'll help clean up!

we used to catch camel spiders and scorpions in iraq and have them fight. the scorpion always won. sorry off topic =D

Tons of em out where I live. They are harmless, kinda cute too if u can get past the grossness of how big they are!
