Its the fact that you are not thinking about what would happen to someone else. I live on a street that has the perfect turn for drifting, and short time drivers, seeing movies think that a day of practicing in a parking lot gives them experience they need control a car under uncontrolled circumstances! I watch these little punks drive on my street at unsafe speeds, on the street where my kids play! So maybe you expected someone to say "ooh nice..." Your Z is not a TOY!! Respect it...and its capabilities...don't take it for granted bc you will lose, hopefully you wont...
There are more and more events here in SoCali that you can go "practice" ..under controlled situations. TAKE IT TO THE TRACK!

So here's the question, how many turns do you think is safe, in the rain? on a public street? How many turns do you think it will take for you crash into something or someone?

i'm sorry to upset you so much. to me, an empty road in the middle of the night is enough displaced from "innocent people" that i felt it was alright to do what i did. the road is bordered by large empty grass and a parking lot. and if someone knows of a track anywhere near orange county that does drift events, i'd love to know. the idea of driving to buttonwillow isn't exactly attractive. i really wish i could go to a track.

you live in california dude, its the drifting mecca of the united states, there are CONSTANT events, and they have some of the top drifters in the world as instructors

justdrift.com is usually at willow springs, driftday.com has irwindale events plus drift 101 for people like you, and theres usually other organizations with events like drift buffet, and local groups that dont do it as regularly.

yeah man, once you start hitting up organized events you'll end up seeing everyone elses point of view. Not only that you'll be able to go as hard as you like with minimal risk to you and your car compared to the street. You will have a blast.

indeed. i can defend my occasional street drift sure, but i don't disagree about the track part. if i can find a way to do it at the track, i will for sure. it's not that i don't see your point of view, as generally you guys are completely right. its just that since as of right now, i don't have a track to go to (but thats looking like it will change), i've felt alright about the occasional street drift in the middle of the night when nobody is around.

i've also been toying with the idea of scraping some cash together to have a beater drift car rather than using my Z as a learning car. 240sx or something maybe, so that i don't eff up the Z while learning to drift. not to mention a 240 would be a lot cheaper to put tires on.

Take it to an empty CLOSED parking lot where no cars could possibly interfere with your F&F driving!
See you in a few months when you start whining about how you got a ticket, how you bent your rim, yada, yada, yada!

Glad I don't live near you!
Even better than that above...

Take it to the track! Cali Speedway isnt too far

From personal experience, I would say that I can understand that you see rain, nice big open turn, middle of the night, no cars..Why not right? I completely understand man. I've been there. You have to scope out spots though. look for local docks or something, somewhere far from a main road. Just go there one day, park, kick back, and see if anyone comes around. If no one does, and you feel you're up to it...go ahead. But remember the consequences that can occur. The Z has plenty of torque to do half-*** drifts in dry weather at a slow speed. In the rain, it is harder to control, easier on the rubber sure!, but still harder to control if you understeer or oversteer. Just keep it off the main roads...cause when it does go bad..hopefully it's just you suffering the consequences..and not some innocent "by standered" you didn't see cause it was dark and raining. As for the track, if you're up to taking your car to a drift-day, that's cool too.

To all the people ragging on stan, do you guys never speed? I mean, just plain ol speeding CAN endanger innocent people's lives, too. But we all do it anyway, don't we? Granted, it may or may not be as dangerous as drifting on the streets but I just thought it may be a little hypocritical. I dont know, flame away.

To me it seems like rain drift is a good idea as you can go a lot slower and still break traction, so in theory if you're gonna eff up a drift, better to do it at low speed.

Anyhow, I had been going around for about an hour, and was feeling pretty good. I am coming down Antonio Parkway in ladera, and two cop cars pass me. I'm going pretty slow (5 or so under, wet roads and all ) and they go off in the distance. I come up to crown valley parkway and start the slip as i go around, pulling it completely sideways as i get past the little turn island. I drift across crown valley (no cars besides one behind me) and pull out to get into the left turn lane to go say hi to a friend.

As the car that was behind me comes down into the left turn lane, I notice a light bar in the glow of my brake lights Light goes green, I make my left turn, and he immediately turns the lights on. Cop comes to the car, and I used all the great knowledge I've gotten off this forum. Engine off, dome lights on, license / insurance in hands, hands on steering wheel, windows open. I still am on temp registration, so he realized it was a new car to me. I explained I was sorry and that the car is a handful in the rain, so I'm still getting a handle on how to keep it under control. "I've got way more horsepower than you and you don't see me fishtailing all over the place. You need to slow down" He then reminded me that I was on a provisional license (it was almost midnight, I'm not supposed to be driving pasta 11), and sent me off with a warning.

Moral of the story? It's easy to make excuses for drifting in the rain!
You're an idiot.. what kind of fool goes around purposely trying to drift a new Z in the rain in the city at midnight..

next post in the wrecked Z forum....

you already answered your own question, drifting is more dangerous, speed limits are arbitrary anyways, drifting being illegal is universal to any country with road laws
