Default drifting and the police

It was pissing down rain last night so I decided to go out for a nice rain drift. Everything went great and the Z went like a champ. To me it seems like rain drift is a good idea as you can go a lot slower and still break traction, so in theory if you're gonna eff up a drift, better to do it at low speed.

Anyhow, I had been going around for about an hour, and was feeling pretty good. I am coming down Antonio Parkway in ladera, and two cop cars pass me. I'm going pretty slow (5 or so under, wet roads and all ) and they go off in the distance. I come up to crown valley parkway and start the slip as i go around, pulling it completely sideways as i get past the little turn island. I drift across crown valley (no cars besides one behind me) and pull out to get into the left turn lane to go say hi to a friend.

As the car that was behind me comes down into the left turn lane, I notice a light bar in the glow of my brake lights Light goes green, I make my left turn, and he immediately turns the lights on. Cop comes to the car, and I used all the great knowledge I've gotten off this forum. Engine off, dome lights on, license / insurance in hands, hands on steering wheel, windows open. I still am on temp registration, so he realized it was a new car to me. I explained I was sorry and that the car is a handful in the rain, so I'm still getting a handle on how to keep it under control. "I've got way more horsepower than you and you don't see me fishtailing all over the place. You need to slow down" He then reminded me that I was on a provisional license (it was almost midnight, I'm not supposed to be driving pasta 11), and sent me off with a warning.

Moral of the story? It's easy to make excuses for drifting in the rain!

hmmmm...
MAybe you should get some more experience driving with 4 wheels stuck to the ground before you start driving without them stuck to the ground...

those ugly popo cars only have around 310 hp in 4 or 5 speed auto. They are crazy fast though... faster then your regular 300hp stock 350z, probably cuz the copmobiles are pretty modded.

But there are some special "undercover" cars with close to 500hp that is specialy built to bring down ilegal street racing. Like back in the day when colima road was filled with em... most common i saw was a honda civic but of course, those were used to go into civic meets before a race so you can find out where everyone went.

I think the LAPD considered using the Hummers as a patrol vehicle....

Glad you didn't get arrested

good story, youre lucky he let you off. just be careful. Although i think that it is a good idea to explore the traction limits of the car in a safe environment ie no other cars around. Ive done it a few times in empty wet parking lots and it really is a good learning tool to see how the car reacts so if you ever encounter it in actual driving conditions you know a little bit more of what to expect.

cops cars arent that fast. my friend is a cadet and drives the cars around all the time. said they only have suspension mods, intake and exhaust. Took him for a ride in my Z, it has intake exhaust clutch flywheel and plenum and he said its a lot faster than a cop car. And i also watched another friend in his stock Z pull away from a cop with no problem. He drifted, the cop didnt.

Good story but given your experience, or lack of I suspect before you hit your 1000th post here you'll be posting something to the effect "I totaled my z". After you've posted a few "I got a ticket" and "Where can I get cheaper Ins" threads.

no tickets here here yet. there's not really a way to argue with the experience thing, but i don't think i'll be totaling my Z anytime soon. maybe because i'm paying for it myself i am more careful than other people my age.

the normal police cruisers really have that much power? i figured they were generally slow. i have read that the fast chp cars (camaros maybe?) have 500hp.

and on a side note, it is a HELL of a lot easier to hold a clean drift in the rain. i was starting to wonder, would having a bunch more torque have a similar effect, since your ability to break traction would be much greater (given the same size tires)?

Here we go, another teen F&F driver taking it to public streets!

Drifting in the rain and on public streets= TEH GHEY!

Take it to an empty CLOSED parking lot where no cars could possibly interfere with your F&F driving!
See you in a few months when you start whining about how you got a ticket, how you bent your rim, yada, yada, yada!

Glad I don't live near you!

wow, pretty proud of yourself huh? You say you are more careful than other people your age, but you decided to "break traction" in the rain, on a public street...Ok, that makes sense.

that was one of two turns that weren't in an empty parking lot. what's with the negativity? i had spent the night practicing in a lot and on the way to a friend's house i saw a perfect opportunity. is that really so horrible that we have to invoke F&F comments?

When you admittedly drift in the rain on public streets, then yes we will bring the F&F comments.

Take it to the TRACK, leave the innocent people out of it!

Just a matter of time before your showing off in public streets will get you busted. All it takes is a witness to witness your reckless driving and your busted by the POPO. Just a matter of time!
