a little gift to your wife and mom for mothers day.
Get whatever - just include a gift receipt in an envelope in the box and tell them when they open it that you tried your best, you just wanted to show them you love them and it will not hurt your feelings in the least if they are not completely in love with the item you purchased (as you point out the gift receipt envelope). Then give'em a big wet smooch (wife - lips, mom - cheek).
They'll melt. =)

Another thought...
Although not great timing since you have a dated coupon, but for other holidays that suggest you give a gift to a significant female other: make up a goofy certificate "Good for two pairs of shoes* of <insert name here> choosing, then dinner and a walk/movie/ice cream/hawt seks<or whatever>"
*DVD's, shoes, an outfit, matching bra and panties, whatever
The point is to go shopping with your S.O. and let her pick out whatever - make her feel special and enjoy the trip with her. Then whatever else. You still get to buy a gift, she gets to pick it out, you spend time together, everyone has a great time!

hahaha that reminds me of highschool a time where womens demands were so light and simple. as you get older the whole ballgame changes rules. nevertheless those are very good advice.
"Gift certificates" were always big in my family - still are. I think it's fun because you guarantee time together and that the gift receiver gets what they want.
I, in fact, did this just last Christmas for my boyfriend for a new watch. 'Course, I didn't expect we'd have to look in TWELVE stores in TWO states to find *it*, but he's happy. =)
hawt seks rules.
