I remember those days. I didn't even have my drivers license back then but I have very vivid memories of 2nd gen. Japanese American dudes sporting mullets cruising dumped (lowered to an extreme) Corolla GTS hatchbacks, 3rd gen. Celicas, Supras. The Toyotas were "the" cars to mod and be seen in back then but you'd also see some ridiculously low and loud RX3's and RX7's every now and again.

Most of those dudes fixed up their cars in a similar fashion-it was almost like a code that they followed to a tee. The basic set up was this: lowering springs that were cut to go even lower (guys on a budget just cut their stock coils), headers, test pipe (nobody made test pipes back then so they would take their stock cats to shops and have custom t. pipes made), turbo muffler with a 3" tip, and rare Japanese rims. (i.e. SSR EXC, Hayashi Racing 502, 503, Weds Bavaria, Work Equip, Hoshino, etc.) [Back then nobody went over 16's and the dudes on a budget settled for Enkei 92's. If you were "pimpin", you'd have your 3 piece wheels chrome dipped but most settled for polished.] And lastly, most of the guys would run some type of license plate frame or decal as a sign of solidarity. For example, the Hawiian Island Creations logo was very popular as were prominent clubs of the day such as Shoreline Racing.

Also, if I recall correctly, those dudes were rebelling against the mainstream. There were other young people modifying their cars back then but in the minds of the "import tuners" of the day, most of them didn't have a clue. For example, most of the (mainstream) kids were running the fart cans of the day: the Ansa muffler. The mainstream kids thought that the low fart sound was "tough" but the Japanese/Asian kids vehemently rebelled against the norm by preferring the higher pitched throaty tone of an uncorked exhaust system. The mainstream kids didn't get it but that was the point. We didn't want them to get it. It was like our secret code, in a way.

It's hillarious to me because back in the day, that was the way that your car needed to sound (if you knew what was up) but today most people would dismiss that sound as raspy or obnoxious. Trends unfold in interesting ways.

But yeah, those were the days. There were so many kids cruising that the cops couldn't stop them. We used to sit on the brick embankment eating yakitori as car after car would chirp their tires going across the intersection. It was great to hear those loud exhausts booming off the Downtown buildings.

It's clearly not the same as it used to be but the spirit of car enthusiasm is still there so it's all good. And now we have medical cannabis dispensaries all over the county so I can't really complain.

See you all at the show. I recommend plenty of sunscreen and water. If you're showing, a canopy would be nice. Some of us will probably end up congregating at Haru-Ulala or Izayoi (Japanese Izakaya pubs) on 1st Street after the show if we're not too beat.

Peace!!

seemed a bit dead? that sucks! I wanted to enter my cars at this event but I kinda have a feeling that it might be dead because of the heat and HIN next week and other competitors are gearing for the HIN event. See you guys at HIN!

Holy, there still are some of the old crew out huh? Lots of WS guys drove the muscle cars, vegas, camaros, dusters. g-town had a few but mostly like another post said, toyota's, mazda's and nissans and capris. I remember a ton of those small pick up toyota trucks and corollas all dropped. An old friend of mine had a red 240Z all fixed up, it was one of the hottest back in the day with straight pipes with glass packs, dropped. Lots of custom exhausts. The ES boys had all the lowriders. Nisei week would always have some fight between some group or another and remember the asian task force?? Cruising, Mago's, the castle or pier for foosball, damn, brings back memories....
