The NW group here is pretty tight, even with the Portland members... its seems SD meets usually gets 'absorbed' by LA meets...

Funny because on the way to work I was driving next to a G35, as we pulled up to an intersection... another one came up. Oh man.

*oh yea, I don't have a Z*

Every forum I'm on, every car I've owned, the SD meets pretty much suck. We would have to go to LA (2 hours away or so) for the better meets.

The only HUGE San Diego car meet I've attended was SO CAL EURO, probably around 200-500 cars or so? They usually on speed vision or some crap like that too.

that's ironic... you would think SoCal should be the Mecca of cars like ours...

up here in seattle we're already planning our meet in March... hopefully i could attend before moving down...

Ive been trying to go to that for probably 5 years now, all the way back to when I had my SR 240. I have never made it even though I used to be a real active member over at northwestnissans and it always looked like a good time.

On a side note, do any of you that live in San Diego ever go to tijuana to fill up on gas? I have heard that its way cheaper there. I am thinking getting rid of the Z and getting a vw tdi for the crazy mileage they get, and so I can run veggie oil. I also heard diesel in Tijuana is like $1.39/gallon, thats insane considering its almost 4 bucks here.

This is a joke right? The gas over there is horrible. When you come down here, drive behind a car with TJ plates and take a whiff of how HORRIBLE their cars smell. Which also means you will have to drive 40mph on the freeway to FOLLOW one because they drive dangerously slow.

Also, I have never crossed the border (lived here 25 years or so) obviously its just my opinion but fuuck a 3rd world country... I have no reason to go to Mexico. Recently the crime in TJ has gotten REAL bad, I would say the past few months. No one even wants to cross the border anymore.

I can relate with you man I used to live in Tac town and moved back to the O.C., and visit S.D. quote often because all my friends live down there.
With that in mind S.D. is pretty expensive all around. The city is nice and you will love it way more than rainy WA. Gas is ridiculously expensive in S.D.
It's like 10 cents more per gallon compared to the O.C. especially right next to UCSD.
Gun control is ridiculously crazy in CA to. When I moved I left all my guns with a good war buddy in Portland. It's going to be impossible for you to get a concealed weapons permit down here, and I also think that they don't even have them. Assault weapons/fully auto are banned as well, but you can still purchase them at gun shows. It's a grey area. Transportation of guns is a grey area as well. When you transport weapons they must be broken down, and you must be going to a shooting range. As far as keeping your guns, just store them someplace safe when you get down here, and what no one knows you can't get in trouble for. You won't even need your guns as S.D. is pretty safe it's not super ghetto like parts of WA. A lot of the clubs have metal detectors as well.
Also if your worried about drunk military guys you have no need to worry.
Their is only Navy, Coast Guard, and a Tradoc Marine base down there, so if you ever run into trouble with some em they will be easy to deal with.
Not like militarized WA with a ridiculous amount of Socom units.

My advice is if the pay is good, you should just move down, as you will enjoy the weather, roads, and just generally be happier down here.
I hope I helped.

Hey thanks for the reply, I accepted the job this morning and am trying to give my letter of resignation to my supervisors but I cant find any of them lol. Its kind of a short notice considering my last day is next Thursday (we get every other friday off), and I am also getting next monday off too. But its close enough to two weeks notice and I wont have anything to do in the mean time any way.

I am definitely lookin forward to SD, just not the 19 hour drive in a uhaul towing my car...

Ouch your driving a uhaul and towing your car. g/l with that.
But in the long run you gain a lot of experience. I've made that drive more than a couple of times. 19 hours if you make no stops, realistically it's gonna take you at least 24. The fastest I ever made Tacoma to O.C. was 16 hours nonstop only stopping for gas. Restroom brakes were combined with gas.
My advice to you take a lot of red bull and water with you as well as snacks.
Try to tackle the big cities like Portland, Sacramento, Stockton, and L.A. anytime except rush hour. Departing WA at like 7-8pm is ideal.

THIS IS A MUST IF YOU TAKE ANY ADVICE FROM ME. GO THE SPEED LIMIT IN OREGAN THE COPS ARE BRUTAL. you are goind to be tempted to speed in oregan because everything is just straight flat road, but don't go anything over 75mph.
Also when your about to hit the WA/oregan border make sure that you are awake and alert, very twisty with a lot of inclines and declines very fun for a Z, but not for a U haul. Same advice when you hit the oregan/CA border.
G/L with the drive they are not fun. Only in the state borders is it fun only if you have a fun car.
Let me know if you have any ?'s

why don't you ship it? it'll be around $800 or so. You'll be paying big bucks for gas and motel anyways... and all that mileage ur putting on to ur car... best thing to do is call up some independant transporters (ones they use to haul dealer cars)... they're cheaper than thru corporate

The car will be on a full hauler trailer, no wheels on the ground. I realize I could ship it but I can get away with a uhaul and car hauler for about $700 total. The gas will be expensive but they are paying me .49/mile, $60/day for food, and for a motel. Then they will pay me a $2500 lump sum to move down there, which the uhaul cost comes out of.

The thing is, I have to pay for all this up front on top of the deposit and hook up fees for a place, so I am trying to do it as cheap as possible since I really dont have that kind of liquidity being out of college not too long ago.

As far as Oregon, Ive driven I-84E a few times from Tri cities to Portland, and that road does suck but Ill just set the cruise control. I have heard some horror stories with the cops on those roads though since they love to get us washington folks.

I think I might drive to Sacramento the first day and then its only a 7 hour drive to san diego the next day.

Ill be starting next friday and should roll into San Diego Saturday afternoon. Theres no rush hour stuff on the weekends is there?

Rush hour still exists on weekends, your leaving empty road WA, and about to come to congested CA. You'll see what I'm talking about once you hit L.A.
And for most of the drive you will be on I-5 straight shot. Easiest and the fastest route, and yeah watch out for the oregan cops man they are ticket happy.

So as time gets nearer my dad is getting more leary lol. I havent ever been to San Diego, but from what I have read and what you people have told me I will really like it.

He really wants me to fly down there and check it out before I go but I dont think its necessary. Everyone I have talked to has said its a great place and is really nice.

He is worried about me being so close to the border with all the crime and such in Tijuana and that it carries over into San Diego.

What do you guys who live there think, do I really need to fly down there and check it out? Is crime there bad? Is it dangerous for me to live there by myself not knowing anyone? Is it real slummy in the majority of the city?

What was your reason for wanting to move there again? I don't know anyone who didn't like at least some part of San Diego. It's a great city for sure. But crime all depends on where you are living. Most of SD is very nice but of course there are some sketchier areas. But overall it's plenty safe and you'll be fine alone.

Making a move is a big deal...I don't seen any harm in flying in for a weekend to see the area and figure out where you would most like to live.

And for getting gas in TJ...that would be a major pain. It takes forever (like hours) to get back across the border sometimes.

Well just got off the phone with the guy. Change of plans for a couple months.

They are putting me on a project south of phoenix right on the border for about 2 months. Then Ill be moving to the San diego office.

That works out way better for me right now because I can leave all my stuff here, and move my fiance and my self at once. They'll also pay for 2 tickets a month back to washington while im down there which is pretty sweet.

so i just came back from the 2-day interview trip... from one WA resident to another, i can tell you that you'll like it down there... right now just waiting for them to give me an offer and i'll hand in my notice...

i stayed in carlsbad but went all over to oceanside, lajolla, gaslamp and mission beach. one thing to keep in mind is, the distance from carlsbad to downtown is pretty far- sort of like going from everett to kent, if not more, and that's w/out traffic. and people drive crazy-*** fast down there. i was being tail-gated at 80mph. i went to look at a couple of apartments as well up north. they range from $1200-1,600/month. the locals said to wait a year or so and the prices for houses will drop back down to mid $300K.
