Ill be starting next friday and should roll into San Diego Saturday afternoon. Theres no rush hour stuff on the weekends is there?
Actually it is closer to 9 or 10 from Sac. And there is rush hour, but it is not that bad. If you make it to Sac and then finish the drive in Saturday you will not have a problem.

Did you find out what area of SD your job is in? I can help give you an idea of cost of living if you know the area you will be working in and trying to live in.

I just spent 10 days in Seattle and gas prices were nearly identical, so I wouldn't worry there. ~1400sq ft fairly new condo's (not downtown) are nearing $299,000 now and make a good entry level jump into ownership. I've spent a good deal of time in Seattle and I think you'll find traffic on most routes better here, with the exception of the 5 north of downtown.

i stayed in carlsbad but went all over to oceanside, lajolla, gaslamp and mission beach. one thing to keep in mind is, the distance from carlsbad to downtown is pretty far- sort of like going from everett to kent, if not more, and that's w/out traffic. and people drive crazy-*** fast down there. i was being tail-gated at 80mph. i went to look at a couple of apartments as well up north. they range from $1200-1,600/month. the locals said to wait a year or so and the prices for houses will drop back down to mid $300K.
I was up in Everett at Boeing for some DELMIA training... everybody drives 60 there... it was very strange...

If you live in Carlsbad and have to work south, I-5 will be a nightmare.

Very different places. I love the Seattle area and Washington in general, but I wouldn't want to live there long term. San Diego is just the perfect climate.
