Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone had ever boughten fresh fish, sushi grade, in socal. I know of the ranch market but some times the freshness can be questionable. My girlfriend and I love sushi so I bought a basic sushi making kit and will be suprising her on Valentines day and make her request of sushi, she's spoiled. Im probably going to buy some toro, unagi, scallops, crab(easy find) and maybe some smelt egg and what not. Anyway, thanks for any tips or suggestion you can provide me with!

 

Try a seafood market or japanese market, fresh caught fish always works best though, and be careful not to get sick

 

I know Mitsuwa has Tuna and other types of seafood you can buy, and cut for sashimi or whatever you prefer. I think the closest one to the OC might be in Costa Mesa.

Go to Downtown La, make some friends in the business.

 

you should ask this on a Chef Forum or Restaurant Forum..most sushi grade fish cant be purchased from a super market.

Yup. Mitsuwa would be your best bet. I buy sushi grade seafood all the time there. Way cheaper to make your own sushi, vs. going to a restaurant.

 

Or in Rowland Heights, theres Greenland Market or Nijiya Market. Both on Colima, within 2 miles of each other ;D

I just checked it out after work, they have a really nice selection of Sashimi fish and saki . I think Im going to pick up some tuna, red snapper, eel and jumpo scallops.... now i just need to find come good rice.

I've tried many times to make good white rice but it never never comes out the way as it does and taste in sushi/jdm restaurants. Im going to try to pick up some from a sushi place but It probably wont keep fresh till she gets to my house...

 

Theres actually rice that is just for making sushi, not sure which brand is good, but they turn out more sticky than normal chinese white rice. Just add some rice vinegar to the rice once its done and stir it up, very easy to make.

 

Another yup. Sushi rice isn't just plain rice..its stickier and mixed with a very slight dash of vinegar. Its got more gluto whatever or something...
