Pair arrested for more than 130 auto burglaries in O.C.
The 18-year-old man is accused of taking expensive items from cars left unlocked overnight in residential burglaries, police say.

ORANGE A man and woman were arrested in connection to more than 130 auto burglaries throughout Orange County, which added up to thousands of dollars in stolen items, authorities said.
Corey Patterson, 18, of Garden Grove confessed to burglarizing vehicles left unlocked overnight in residential neighborhoods primarily in Orange, Anaheim, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Yorba Linda, said Orange Police Sgt. Dan Adams.

"We believe at least 30 of the burglaries occurred in Orange," Adams said.

A month-long investigation into a vehicle burglary ring led to the arrest of Patterson. He was arrested Friday on the I-5 south freeway in Oceanside while undercover officers conducting surveillance pulled him over and took him into custody, Adams said.

Patterson's aunt, Annette Orne, 30, was arrested Friday at her home in the 12000 block of Haster Street in Garden Grove. Adams said that although Orne was not involved in the thefts, she was responsible for housing the stolen property, which ranged from electronic items like iPods and laptops to credit cards and identification cards.

Patterson was living with Orne.

"She was well aware that a lot of the items in her house were stolen property from thefts that he had committed and we also found stolen property in her immediate possession," Adams said.

Based on the initial investigation, Patterson's crime spree started in Oct. 2007 with the most recent burglary happening the night before his arrest.

Patterson would enter unlocked vehicles from about midnight to 4 a.m. and would take expensive items such as GPS navigation systems and would leave behind CDs and car stereos, Adams said.

At the time of the arrests, Patterson and Orne had more than 100 stolen items in their possession including electronic equipment, stolen credit cards, purses and identification cards.

Patterson told investigators he sold the stolen items to support relatives and himself, Adams said.

Investigators are still sifting through evidence and are trying to determine if the stolen credit cards were used by the suspects.

"People should not leave valuables in their car and should always lock their car," Adams said. "You can never be too safe and always take your valuable property with you."

Patterson was booked for multiple counts of grand theft and drug charges. He had a large amount of marijuana while he was arrested, Adams said. He is being held at Orange County Jail and is ineligible for bail.

Orne was booked on possession of stolen property and possession of fictitious driver licenses. She posted bail on Saturday.

Adams said that as the investigation continues, more charges could be added and they are also looking into whether more people were involved.

Adams said that about 40 percent of the property that was recovered and stolen in Orange has been returned to the victims and they are still calling possible victims.
