oscars are probably some of my all time favorite fish...

when i started in 5th grade i had a 15 gallon with oscars, pacus, convicts, 1 jackdempsey, 1 african cichlid and one red devil...

the red devil picked each and everyone one of them.. i later got another smaller red devil, green and pink terrors and still the red devil was the last one besides my placo standing... had that guy for about 7 years until my dad wanted to clean the tank asian style dumping out all the water and soaping the inside...

killed my lil homie, then i inherited a coi who i had for a good 5 years in my 28 gallon he got so big he had to do a 8 point turn to turn around... he died to and i got the piranha but hes boring as hell...

im aiming to either start a salt water or another oscar/arowana/pacu tank...

salt water tanks can be as easy or hard as you make it... here is some simple advice and a few things to remember...

just like with your car, DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME... dont skimp out cause you want to save a little cash on getting the RIGHT equipment... make sure you are getting QUALITY stuff... it dont matter if it is USED, just make sure its top notch...

the more water volume you have the LESS CHANCE things will go wrong FASTER... (keep in mind, i am NOT saying things WONT go wrong, its just easier to spot the problem before it gets out of hand) in which the common phrase "Bigger is better" can sum it up. i have a 12g nano and things in that tank are more likely to take a crap rather then my 240g which has a total of 350 gallons in it.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING STARTING A SALT WATER TANK...
please take the time to become a active member on a reef/fish forum... your local fish store will tell you AND sell you ANYTHING just to make a quick buck... doing YOUR OWN research and taking the time to educate yourself could have save you HUNDREDS or in my case, even THOUSANDS of dollars!

and for anyone considering going salt water, if you need any extra help or advice, please feel free to pm me.
hope this helps.

Anyone know if you can buff light scrathes out of an acrylic tank? I have a few that you can't see straight on but are annoying when looking at the tank from an angle.

full tank shot

my puppy

2Spot (the Wrapping Octopus RIP) not related to 2pac

my blue spot sting ray

thats crazy the octopus was doing all the damage around the tank bro? i never understood how salt water works do all the fish get along, i mean we see a tank of sharks, octopus stingrays etc... in your mini ocean.

w/ fresh water fish its hard to find cichlids for example that get along...

just curious

any updates on that new octopus or the tank

ok, this is simply in my experience...
IF YOU DO NOT GET A NAME BRAND SKIMMER IT WILL NOT WORK

Undergravel filters!!!! THATS A HUGE NO NO!!!!! that thing will become a nitrate factory! NO ONE USESES those in SW tanks... dont do it, that will be the complete death of your tank....

make sure you get a RELIABLE hydrometer as well... no rinky dink stuff... what skimmer are you going with? the skimmer is the MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR TANK... it sounds like you are settling for a package deal just to get up and running? that could be a very bad idea. i would MOSTY DEF get a SUMP. i have a little over 11 years w/ SW tanks and the SKIMMER and SUMP have proven to be the most important thing in the life of the tank...

if you are planning on keeping corals, those lights wont do it, you will need a decent set of T5's or MH's, you can have PC's but they will have to be FOR CORALS...

wet drys? not really a preferred method but it is ok... HOB (hang on back) filter?! NO WAY! thats shabby stuff...

it completely sounds like they are selling you a COMPLETE FRESH WATER setup with a skimmer and some live rock... TRASH! i would NOT get this, this is in no way a deal...

go to TONGS in fountain valley... let me know if you plan on heading over there, i can set you up with some deals... they have one of the best stores in SoCal. and they will NOT point you in the wrong direction... do not buy from where you are about to get that stuff... they only want your money, i can bet my pink slip that everything in your tank will be dead within 2 months after your cycle. pm me if you need more info...

no new octo as of yet, im going to go looking some time within the month, there are plenty of things that are just not compatible in salt water tanks, you just need to check the chart,

http://www.marinedepotlive.com/mdl_compatibility.html

i have had some other fish in the tank with my shark and they have ended up nipping his fins when he swims, those fish have since been banished from the tank and fed to raccoons i try my best to keep the bio-load down any ways in my tank to maintain pristine water quality. things have been working great so far. since then i have just added 1 baby blue tang, he happens to be my favorite fish in the tank now, he has so much character, he is a little bigger then a silver dollar.
