i need hookup's for a removable steerwheel
hey guys,
well my neighbor informed me (so has my mother)that there are people that have been looking at my car. and the other night that they were trying to look through my windows. since i have tint, i guess they didn't see my ipod laying in the passenger side seat.
i don't have a garage to put my car in so the only theft prevention i have is the pedal lock (i forgot what its called) and a dog lol.
so i'm thinking of installing a removable steering wheel, the latest quote that i got from a shop is just about $400 installed (hub/steeringwheel/installation). which is quite high lol.
so does anyone have hookups in this department?
thanks

steering wheel is relatively easy to install.
Side of OEM steering wheel, there are two clips, these cover the Torx screws that keep the airbag in place. you'll have to remove them using a specialized tool (comes with the works bell hub) and then you can remove the airbag. unclip the airbag and make note of which plugs it came out from. also you should see clips for the oem steeringwheel into the oem hub are. unclip this horn/cruise control harness.
you will then see a center nut, you'll have to crank that off, it's like a 19mm or something like that. i forget. loose it off, but don't remove it completely. then grab both hands on the oem steerin wheel and do a slight side-to-side motion while pulling toward you to remove the steering wheel. it need to get off the steering column's tooth'd spindle. you'll notice all of a sudden the steering wheel flying toward you, but thankfully you didnt remove the center nut, else you'd probably punch'd yourself in the face with the oem steering wheel. take it off and you're pretty much set. insert the new hub and new wiring harness for the horn, and follow the directions that came with the hub (i.e. setting up the correct horn rings etc)
i'd probably not skimp $$ on the hub and get one from a reputable company such that there isnt any "play" in the steering or bad imperfections with the machining, else the steering wheel might strip the spindle or worse, crack under use..

Why buy an aftermarket wheel if you're concerned with theft? It will just add another bullseye to your car. Sounds like you need a good alarm first.
I agree with Cheston's reasoning when considering a wheel and quick release purchase. Keep in mind this part is vital to your car's control and could kill you if in an accident. Buy track tested and high quality. I have a Vertex 330mm wheel, Splash Boss short hub, and Works Bell quick release in my S13. Top notch, great for grip/drifting, and my horn still works. I'd like to put a similar setup in my G, but i'm not willing to give up my airbag yet.
Try Speed Alliance for your hub/wheel needs. Better to give them a call as the website doesn't list everything they carry.

Go see Insu at Elite Auto Performance and tell him I sent you. Elite can get the parts and do the install for you. When I had my Z they did just that and never had any issues. The shop has done every mod on my Z and now my corvette. The owner himself has a Greddy TT ZR. If anything give him a call and get prices if you want to do the install. Talk to him only and just mention me.
