Has anyone done or know of a LS engine swap in CA and the difficulty and requirements for getting a smog test?

^same year or newer engine and you can't swap an SUV/truck engine in a car. Than you would have to go to a smog reff to get it legalized(so all smog stuff must be hooked up)

If it makes our car fast, its illegal. Moderate improvement is all that's allowed in CA.

Talked to someone at CARB and they directed me to this page on their site.
Look under heading for Engine Changes

Once the swap is complete you have to take the car to a referee and they sign off on these requirements. After that you just get smog checks as usual without having to go back to a referee.

GM performance E-ROD kit will work... problem is the exhaust manifolds are nowhere near fitting which have the cats on them... so then "legal" catalytic converters are needed on top of the kit
$6500 inc LS6 engine (SS camaro), harness, control unit, and smog canister,
+trans
+ sikky LS oil pan, mounts, and headers w/ exhaust
+ three way catalytic converters... high flow cats will not pass referee inspection
+ alot of custom fabrication to get guages and everything associated working correctly

Engine Changes

Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:

The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.

The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.

If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

Vehicles converted to 100% electric drive, with all power supplied by on-board batteries are considered in compliance with the engine change requirements. All fuel system components must be removed prior to inspection. For additional information contact the ARB helpline at (800) 242-4450

After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine
