Question Texas Front Plate Requirement?

Got pulled over on 190 in Dallas for 'passing' a police officer - I was going 6 UNDER the limit. Anyway, he just wanted to bother me and wrote me a ticket for not having a front plate.

I have never ever had a front plate before - Ford truck, Maxima, and Z. 10 years and I have never had a problem. Is this really a law? I asked two police officers yesterday and they said it isn't? What is the verdict?

How can I temporarily mount it without drilling into the bumper?

Besides, I have never seen a Corvette with a front plate. Damn po-po

yes this is a law.. i have been told many a time by the po-po that it is a law but have never received a ticket for it.

one cop said an officer would have to really have a stick up his *** to actually write a ticket for that... just double sided tape it to your bumper and go to court and said you were not aware of the law.. .. go to a parking lot and take pictures off ALL the cars that do not have front plates.. take these pics with you to court.

i estimate 30 % of cars do not have them here in texas.

i will never mount the front plate on my z good luck

i will never mount mine either, even if i get a ticket. putting the plate on the front takes something away from the look of the car

Ive been pulled over to see the car, for speeding and because one of my businesses is right on the corner of a police station and never once have I been told about not having one. Im not ruining the front with a plate.

Front plates are required unless the vehicle is classified as a classic vehicle (you have retired TX state representative Jim Horn, a fellow vintage Datsun Z and 300ZX Twin Turbo owner to thank for that one).

Michael.

It is a law. My brother got a ticket for not having one on the front of the car, but he got pulled over for speeding. A cop shouldn't pull you over for not having one, but sorry to hear that.

It is required. But just like toykilla said the if the cop is a dick then he will give you one. I put my plate in the grill with zip-ties here in San Antonio. I got pulled over a month ago for speeding and as sonn as he asked for my documentation he went straight to the front to see if i had one. Also I dont know if you guys have read in the latest sport compact magazine the have all the laws for all the states for drivers.

Well, this was a State Trooper and he was the worst officer of the peace I have been in contact with. To pull me over just for passing him, when he was going 10 under is just stupid. He first asked if this was my car or my dad's - then lectured me on passing a police vehicle.

He kept me there for 20 minutes just meandering in his car. When he came back, he asked me to step out of the car to show me where my front plate should be - did I mention how hard it was raining at the time.

IDIOT. I think I will just velcro it on, take a pic, go to the court and then take it back off. Just too pretty of a front end to put a damn plate on

When I took my driving test in my SVT without a front plate, the DPS officer who checked my car and tested me said a number of interesting things about it...

1. I was allowed to take my test without one, but if I'd failed I would have had to retake it in another car.

2. Although it's the law to have one, cops shouldn't write you a ticket for not having one.

3. Although cops shouldn't write you a ticket for not having one, they can use it as grounds to pull you over.

In my experience Texas DPS officers have generally been power tripping neo-fascists when compared to regular police officers. But let's face it, we're talking about a job where it's been proven you only need an IQ of 90 to perform adequately, which explains a lot.

Lemme guess...was he a young cop? Bastard was probably pissed that you could afford a Z and he couldn't. Nothing wrong with being a "working man" or a cop either...they just SO often end up being jackasses.

Looks like that bracket sacrifices about 30% of the airflow through the grill...I'd rather take my chances w/ getting pulled over.

An old crusty DPS officer - much worse. Years of becoming jaded to 'punks' in sports cars, I believe, led to his charming persona.

Oh, well. I will just get the double sided tape this weekend, take some pictures, send to the court, and take the plate off.

Happy Zing!

Yes its the law, normally the officer gives you a repair option if its your first offence. If he didnt, then I would bet you did something to **** him off.

I believe the ticket is 170 bucks, could be more now. Oh btw, if its plano you got the ticket in, when the officer comes out and checks it he will pull on it to make sure it is bolted in place, also he will go to the back of the vehicle to make sure the back one is on as well.

I got a repair option in plano to put the plates on my Envoy. That's what they did.

Well, the court will give me the option. But, in reality I didn't do anything to warrant getting pulled over OR to get the ticket. OH well.
