ah nice to see a real racer chime in... this arguement could go on forever like the middle east. plenty of top name shops in japan(including amuse) run 19s on their track 350Zs, the GTR comes with 20s guess it should never see a track, and so on and on and on... believe me im suprised and impressed my 19s are much lighter than most 18s and i seem to always be running PS2 tires, but to each his own.

oddly the top name shops don't run 19" in any ratified competition... yes, they run 19" and sometimes 20" in shows, track car comparison... best motoring videos...
but that is the difference between shows / advertisement and racing where wheel size is regulated.

besides... true that a 19" RE30 is lighter than an 18" rpf1.. but also true that an 18" RE30 is lighter than a 19" RE30 and the momentum of inertia is lower.

and btw... the argument ain't gonna go forever..
19" a lot of "magazine race car"...
18" and lower... a lot of car at the race track.

mateo thats all a good opinion oh i mean point. im sure when the engineers at rays were designing their 19" and 20" forged monoblock line they were thinking about the need for a disclaimer "for offroad use only, using these strong, lightweight forged wheels may cause damage to other racers egos" i should use my 19" RE30s for show only and get a set of 17" maybe even 16" for track use

 

Cornell... I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they make the 19" & 20" for the fact there are buyers out there. With that being said, I do agree with Mateo that for more track use the fundamental fact is, the lesser the rotational mass needed to be move the better. Therefore a lighter (smaller more cases than other) is the better buy. I don't think Mateo, and I'm not, saying a larger wheel is a bad/worst purchase. Hell I run 19x11 3-peice heavy-ass WORKs. It's just that you need to look at your/ones needs and go from there.

 

you guys are absolutely right. im not a physics major, but then why are you throwing 18s in the track catagory, they are too huge for track use. if i down size to the same 17s as mateo it just might save me 1-2 lbs per wheel, 8 possible total lbs of savings is a lot to argue about. which comes down to a matter of opinion(or money!) yet again, thats why i stated to each his own in my original post. there are too many variables in this comparison; my car is not a JGTC supercar with wheels held on by one single nut, nor is it an exotic like a porsche or ferrari that comes stock on 19s, you can lose on any size wheel just as you win on any size wheel depends on the car and driver.

 

The way I see it, make the wheel just big enough to stuff em full of brakes and fit the tire you need.

 

8 lbs would be minimal savings if it was sprung weight, but 2 lbs per wheel is savings enough where the weight isn't sprung and the less weight that is present means the car will accelerate, stop, and just generally react better

I bought 19's to look pretty, keeping my stock 18's for track till I can get some 16's
