I got this from one of my officer friends ------>

"Sec. 502.404 Operation of Vehicle Without License Plate or Registration Insignia.

(a) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle that does not display *two* license plates, *at* the front and rear of the vehicle, that have been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.

(b) .....................

(c) .......................

etc."

Section (b) states that if the insignia i.e. registration sticker is displayed improperly, then the driver is in violation, and section (c) refers to tractor trailer trucks and so on.

So as you can see, there is no reference as to whether or not a car came with two plates, and it does say specifically *two* license plates *at* each end of the vehicle. The law used to read "the plates had to be displayed" to the front and rear of the vehicle. This caused numerous problems b/c people were putting them in windshields, and they were difficult for officers to read. In September of last year, the state legislature changed the law to the current reading stating that the plates have to be on the front and rear of the car not just displayed in that direction.

There are two more section (d) and (e). (d) states that dealer vehicles do not have to abide by this law, and (e) states..... Get this.

"(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $200."

Now. That is interesting considering some municipalities like to charge like 4 and 500 bucks for stuff like this. Use that in your defense.

I haven't had a front licence plate in seven years, and I even used to have a British flag on the front of my SVT Contour and I've never had a word said about it, or a ticket issued any time I've been pulled over.

When I talked to a state trooper about it last year he said that the only disadvantage is that if a cop wants to pull you over they can and will use it as a / the reason to pull you over.

I believe the usual fine if you do get a ticket is only $10, so the way I see it, I'd rather pay $10 than spoil the lines of the car.
