Default UTEC via USB or Serial, a poll

Hey folks

I want to get a sense of how many people are successfully using USB to connect to their UTEC. Or how many prefer serial for reliability.

I used serial when I had it out of the car. Then I set up for USB cable. I leave the USB cable in the UTEC at all times. When I'm done tuning I cap off the end of the cable and tuck it away. I have no issues with using the USB cable and it takes up less space.

Exactly what I'm hoping to hear!! :-) But I know some have had connectivity issues with the USB. (although I think most problems are due to a lack of familiarity with hyperterminal, ie knowing to click enter on a blank screen, like you would with telnet or connecting to your router via CLI).

Just want to check the frequency of occurence in the population.

Thx!

I agree with you. For those non network geek types, CLI = Command Line Interface

Just got my UTEC in today! Woot! Never noticed the RJ-12 on it before. Can you connect via console using ethernet? Does the UTEC get an IP? I'm almost afraid to try it..lol

Basically connect to the UTEC via the usb when its out of the car.. But when its in the car and in your case it will be hooked into the tuner wideband also.. So, you will now be connecting to the utec THROUGH the tuner with the rj-12--->serial adapter. Dont worry about any ethernet stuff..

Rick.. wheres the new logs???

Gotcha. I had a feeling the tuner would be my main point of interface once it's all bundled together. So good..that makes it easier.

I was just wondering if the RJ12 was connected to any NIC circuitry, and maybe the UTEC could get an IP. And then maybe hook up wireless to it. And then maybe do log and map management via from my office over the wireless LAN... lol Maybe in a couple years? :-)

Computers now-a-days dont have serial ports as they are slowly getting phased out.. There arent really any pros/cons to it other than installing the usb drivers.. I guess it comes down to availability.. Tuner for sure will require serial port, no USB there..

Have you tried Serial to USB with the Tuner? I think some folks have gotten it to work.

I know different cables yield diff results. Such is the case with my GTech RR. Took two cables before I found one that worked.

If all else fails I'll just go buy a cheap old laptop on eBay.

How would different cables result in different results?

The I use on my GTech is a Belkin I am pretty sure. They make good stuff.

Audible: What brand is your cable interface?

3hree5ive0ero: No difference in the data results. I meant different serial<>USB cable interfaces have different results in terms of success. You can buy 5 different types and only one may work on your application. So much for standards! lol

Im working on my first install today and Im having trouble with the USB-Serial adapter. I got it to connect once but now I cant duplicate the situation as before. I tried searching and this is the best that I have found for info. In the morning I will try pulling the ECU and going the USB only route and see what I come up with. Any info is appreciated.

I actually just went out and purchased another usb---->serial adapter and it is working great.. I had to install the driver that came with it(hidden in the box too) but it does in fact work great.. Some generic POS for $20..

Did you install the drivers for it?

I tried generic ones before and they only work like 50% of the time. generally a belkin unit is the best way to go. Or maybe one of these days the companies will realize NOBODY MAKES LAPTOPS WITH SERIAL PORTS ANYMORE!

I haven't seen a lappy with a serial port for years.
