Installing UTEC, hitting roadblock getting the works re-mounted
Hi folks
So late last night I get into the UTEC install. Everything is going swimmingly (really impressed with the locking ECU connectors) until...
Last step...hook the ECU mounting bracket back onto the two threaded studs where it came from, but now with the UTEC strapped on.
But no matter what I tried, I COULD NOT get the bottom of the bracket to seat onto the stud. Couldn't get the bracket hole to the stud at hall. I can get the stud within about 3mm of the hole, but no further.
I'm afraid to put too much pressure down there, obviously. As far as I can tell the only thing keeping the bracket from "rocking" into place so it seats onto the studs is the wiring and plug going from the UTEC to the ECU. The front plug seems to rub against the insulation above it, and there's just no more room.
Has anyone had to modify their ECU bracket to accomplish reinstall? I'm thinking of drilling another hole on the bottom bracket. Or drilling a hole on both the top and bottom bracket and just moving the entire assembly a little lower, but then I worry about the car's ECU harness being able to reach the UTEC.
Any reinstall tips? It would be much appreciated.
Thx

I had the same problem when I installed my utec. Long story short, I slotted the 2 bracket holes upward and also had to cut away some of the insulation above the ecu for a little added clearance where the utec plugs into the ecu. Cutting the insulation is a pita and I'm not sure if it is nessesary but it does add a little extra clerance. Now it slides in and out easily.

Found this thread...seems that this isn't that rare. Got it in, thanks to the thread and KenK's help.

Just a final report on the install....all done!! No CEL, Map 0 runs stock without a hitch. No smoke from the wiring (my personal fav). She's all good so far.
Let the tuning begin!! (as soon as I get a laptop which doesnt overheat every 30 mins)
Thx for your help guys!

Soon to come. Besides my work laptop (which I'd rather not use for this) my only other right now is my wife's old one, which overheats every 30 min or so. So I'm trolling for an old laptop in good condition, and preferably one with a serial port, since I have been unlucky interfacing with the tuner via Serial <> USB after the RJ11 <> Serial. I have a couple more cables to try before I give up on that. Still, you'd be amazed at how difficult it is to find a 1.xghz AMD or Intel, with 512M memory, 10-20g hd, nic, usb, and serial port on-board. They are either all trashed, or people want ridiculous amounts of money for them.
