Kind of Confused
itis a hardware solution that integrates with the Stock ECU.
I can comment on the UTEC as that is what I have.
I doesn not alter or change the stock ecu. at your predetermined parameters (user settable), the UTEC takes over control of fuel and timing...giving you absolute control of injector pulsewidth and ignition timing degrees relative to TopDeadCenter. SOme other units only deal with offsets of whatever the stock ecu is doing.

the biggest need for an EMS is the abiltiy for the EMS to utilize a MAP sensor.
Our ECU doesn't have a MAP sensor as it uses the MAF meter to tell the engine what is going on.
Technosquare does a good job on their reflash units on the turbonetics kit, but if you up the boost (or overboost) beyond what technosquare flashed the ECu to do, you will be out of luck.
On my UTEC, I have the ability to shut off the fuel flow if I overboost. this is accomplished through the MAP sensor.
this is a simplistic answer. you should read the UTEC manual on the www.turboxs.com website. It'll give you a great idea about what a piggyback controller can do.
