Tuning without engine management
Have you guys ever heard of a type of dyno tuning where the shop does a pull on the dyno, adjusts the AFR and timing slightly then does another pull and adjusts it a little more finely and finally a third time more finely? Like without a piggy back or new ECU. My brother says that thats just a more basic dyno tune that can be done for less power gains but still some.
It's called reflashing. There are a few shops who can flash the Z on the dyno, but not many. Problem is that there are only a few companies selling tuning software and they charge way too much to make it profitable for smaller shops to invest in the software. I can tune GM cars for $250 and make a decent profit. For me to buy software to tune the Z, I'd have to charge double that to make any money.
I don't understand what you're asking. If you want to know if the dyno itself can tune a car, no. The dyno reads your a:f ratio using an O2 sensor, it doesn't communicate with your ECU. The only way to change your tune (either a:f ratio or timing) is by connecting a laptop with tuning software to your ECU through the OBD port under your dash. For a shop to buy the software and cable to tune Z's costs several thousand dollars.
If you are talking about tuning without a ECU or any electronics, then is called a engine with carburetors. Or unless you are talking about like OBD I cars where you can play with adjustable fuel pressure regulators.

This is the software I was referring to in my previous post. The cost of the tuner version is too high to make it worth any local shop buying it. For me to just break even, I'd have to charge over $500 for a tune. To make it really worth getting, I'd have to charge about $750 for a tune.

On how many customers and at what Osiris tuner version cost is your calculation based? Thanks
I think that on short run you are right but on the long run tuning price could/should be lower.

Yeah I caught that late last night and was too lazy to post it up. Yeah its not too echenomical for the tuning shop but for the every day Joe Blow with N/A bolt ons it should be fine. The cost of the Osiris setup is WAY cheaper than an EMS and DYNO tune. So for some one who doesnt have enough mods to justify it to them selves to get the EMS and dyno tune should look at the OSIRIS.

You can Dyno tune with Osiris but it takes alot longer. You do a few pulls while logging and send that in. You get the reflash and load it. Do a few dyno pulls while logging, etc etc. You will eventualy get there but it will take about 2 or 3 sessions of pulls over a longer period of time. So if your patient, then its all good.

It seems like my only alternative for a real-time dyno tune is to buy a UTEC and have it tuned. That will be more expensive that your $750, but I'm not too close to Vegas anyway. My other choice is to wait for the Home Tuner version of Osiris and rent some dyno time on my own, or more likely, hope the map adjustments are similar enough to the UTEC Tuner Kit so that my local tuner can figure it out.
I guess the number of people interested in the real-time tunes without a ECU piggyback is limited to NA people that are serious enough to value it.

I think as more people realize the power of tuning with a good tuner they will spend the money to make more power
Considering Shawn Church is offering an OSIRIS tune for 600 and an hourly rate after that of (I think) $75/hour for future dyno time thats an awesome deal
CHeap to get started 600 --- then you get a new mod and its 75 for a solid hour of tuning to adjust the maps to your new mod --- by someone who knows what they are doing
There wont be too many guys willing to shell out the dough for licence fees but the big shops should be all for it as its easily the most convenient way for entry level tuning
OSIRIS is perfect for NA guys who just need a full tune but arent looking to make 800+whp ya know....at that point a Vpro will be justifiable

I wish a Florida Tuner would provide that option. Jeremy - You listening?

I wish it had a way to handle knock, though...
Im the brother.... where i made a mistake was 350'z use distributeless ignition systems, BUT wat im saying is put a car on a dyno, rpm lock it and manualy adjust the AFR at the MAF, as far as timing idk how to time 350's DIS, idk where the pick up is or if that is how you would even adjust it. On cars with standard distibuter ignition systems, you can adjust the timing and timing curve very easily. Sry about the long drawn out dissucsion on this.
You can only adjust the timing via the ECU
With a consult or Cipher you can increase or decrease it by 4-5 degrees but that is across the board, to make changes in a map you either need the new Osiris to flash the ECU or a piggyback computer which can also do fuel so no need for an AFC to just do fuel
