I put a Borla TD, MD spacer, Pop charger and Berk HFC's on my Z and I am thinking about reseting the ECU. My question is if I undo the battery for a few days to reset the ECU will my keys still start my car or will I have to reprogram for the key? I read something about the Z having a smart key and when you get a new key the car has to be programed for it. Will the car hold the key in memory or will it go bye bye when I reset the ECU?? Thanks

You don't even need to leave the battery unplugged for a few days. I unplugged mine for about an hour or so while I installed my plenum spacer and that was enough to reset it. (You'll know once you get in the car and all your radio stations are gone.)

I believe you can reprogram keys but I dont believe the cars key code ever changes. You program the key to the code that your car has. The code will remain the same for your car, even if theres no battery.
I just started as a tech @ infiniti and that is what ive noticed so far with the keys. Dont quote me I might be wrong

the radio stations have nothing to do with the ECU being reset... that’s just because the battery was disconnected.
You can disconnect the bat for a few seconds and the radio station preset will be gone - but it doesn’t mean the ECU was re-set...
Here's a quick ECU reset procedure:
ooops - posted wrong one... I'll have to find it.

To reset the ecu, just disconnect the battery and pump the brake a few times. Pumping the brake ensures the capacitor drains of all charge and resets the ecu...
I tried the "pedal" sequence procedure and never could get it to work right...

the method you posted is actually the quickest and easiest... turn headlights on too - this helps drain the capacitor
I would also like to know the benifits..I have Strup headers MREV2 intake mani, 516" plenum spacer, Invidia exhaust, and UR Pulleys...will reseting my ECU do anything positive or make it worse.

Your ECU has learned it's setting through driving it around. It's going to have hit targets based on the last time it was reset and what all was done as far as bolt ons. If you add more parts, it's generally a good idea to reset any ECU so that it now learns as well as possible to cope with your new parts. That said, Nissan ECUs should be able to adjust themselves around most any bolt on part you add, so what gains you will make on the rev-up or newer cars with the wideband sensors will probably be negligible, but a general rule of thumb is that it is a good idea to do.
thanks for the quick response pimp..so u think I should do that brake thing? I have the touring model and it says that if i unplug my battery for too long my cd player has this KEY that i will need to input...I dont have service manual..will I lose my cd functionality?

The dealership should be able to get your that information. But I'd get it ahead of time to make sure.

Oh, and you shouldn't have to take your ECU out of the car and mail it off for this service... You should be able to do it in your own garage... That would be cool!
