Default What gear should Dyno pulls be made in?

just got my uprev tune done saturday at Zfever in tampa and all of my maybe 5-6 pulls were done in 3rd gear. this was my first ever dyno and i had no clue. but after some research ive read alot of mixed things. but mainly 4th or 5th. can any experts chime in on this? also what differences in numbers and accuracy will it make?

something tells me they work on alot more 240's 300zx and not many 350z dono if that would make them think 3rd was optimal?

i knew something was fishy when osiris standard which is 500 everywhere and a full dyno tune only turned out to be 750 so 250 for dyno pulls and a tune?.. i mean in my opinion the tune was still good made substantial gains.. but maybe im wrong? anyone else know what gear exactly we should tune and dyno in?

Transmission
Gear Ratios
1: 3.794:1
2: 2.324:1
3: 1.624:1
4: 1.271:1
5: 1.000:0
6: 0.794:1
Final drive: 3.538:1

from what i have read. 1:1 is the best or most accurate. so 5th would be best correct? does anyone know how pulls in another gear would affect accuracy and numbers?

Free food:

You want to dyno in whatever gear is 1:1

For the 5AT, that is 4th gear. For the 6MT, it's 5th. However, for determination of gains/losses in power (one of the only things a dyno is good for), as long as it is the same gear before and after, it doesn't matter if it's 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

You may find that a lot of tuners will tune the car in the gear below 1:1 just to be easier on the engine.

That. with so many variables on public dynos, they are just about useless in determining true absolutely rwhp, and are effectively good for only determining relative gains. knowing that, so long as you are consistent between pulls (ie same gear, same mods, same day, temperature, etc.) you should be good.

so basically as long as all the factors are the same the gains and losses will be correct in any gear but to correctly or in reality MORE accuratly get a correct number the pulls should be made in 5th. thanks for helping me understand! once again my350 members pull threw. best group of ppl in 1 forum i have ever encountered. thanks

Colombo, did you pay that $750 for the tune? I have been talking to Doug over there, and I was not happy with the quoted price he gave me.

I think Zfever likes to play the "what do I feel like charging today" game. I find that to be poor business.

If you want a good tune, accurate dyno, and the best performance shop in tampa, go to S&R Performance. The specialize in Subaru's, G's, Z's, and EVO's but you will find just about everything in there including fully custom built cars. They do it all.

Nail. Meet head.

Spot on. Dynos are only meant for tuning purposes. I wish more people understood this. Trap-speeds are a more accurate representation of power (if you ask me).

My main power adder is nitrous, when tuning i do all my pulls in 4th on the street or on the dyno. Allot less stress on the motor imo...

yea i did. i live in georgia now but w fam in tampa. so i was down for the weekend. i had talked to SnR and they told me they couldnt compete with the price doug gave me. so i said f it. and went with them. couple things i didnt like were that i only got 2 maps. basically on and off. there tuner told me he doesnt do the whole 5 maps thing he does 1 map where u save fuel (which it does alot) and is your race/daily then a valet. i mean the car pulls harder then ever and maybe the 5 maps are unnessesary but they sure do sound convincing. either way. im not gonna complain i mean they were cool as ish the whole time. i stuck around and watched some 240s make some nice turbo numbers. doug seemed like a nice guy(though he hasnt responded to my emails about my dyno) and i got the cipher cable which SnR told me there was noway that for 750 i would get. and the car runs great. maybe down the road after some more mods, ill throw my cash at SnR and have them retune it since i already have a osiris license and cable.
