Default 350Z running on 87 Octane?

So I have a Bully Dog GT tuner which I originally had installed in my truck and figured I would test it out on the Z (Bully Dog has a tune for Nissans). My options for programs are:
1. Performance.
2. Stock.
3. Regular.
So I was curious and called Bully Dog. The tech informed me the Regular tune allows you to run on Regular gas. Anyone heard of this? Not that I plan to do this but wanted to get some input.

I'm going to run a tank thru stock and get mileage then a tank on their stock tune and finally on their performance tune to see which give the best mpg.

So far the Bully Dog is saying I'm averaging 20mpg and the Z says 24. I'll be curious to see what doing the math the old fashon way says (I'll do that each time also).

Z only has 12,500 miles on it and hopefully once I switch to Synthetic oil it will bump it up some.

The Premium Gas requirement is to help prevent detonation. Detuning the engine allows you to run a lower octane gas without the riesk of detonation. That's what #3 is doing to you.

The Bully Dog is pulling timing, which allows you to run lower octane gas. It allows makes less power. It's up to you whether or not the trade-off is worth it.

Why buy a Z if you can't even afford premium. How many of these regular gas posts are asked each week?

I predict the higher the price of gas goes, the more of these threads will appear.

I paid 3.919 for regular in my CR-V at a station that was 2.979 in January today

Damn. By me premium is 4.49 a gallon. Oh well. That's the price you pay for fun.

exactly. if it's not knocking, that 20 cents per gallon savings is apparently worth the risk. (the engineers tried to find the combustion point but can't always account for fuel burning temps or what you might nilly-***** toss in the tank ).

Gas prices have sky-rocketed just in the past few months. I see nothing wrong with running regular gas, as long as the car is tuned for it. Besides, if you think you NEED all the power that the Z offers on the stock ECU mapping, while you're on the street, you're doin' it wrong.

That's irrelevant when you remap the ECU, which is what the OP is asking about. My bikes manual says to run Regular, and I run Premium because I've advanced the timing a bit.

I agree. And yeah, I cry every time I put gas in my gf's car.

you reduce timing you lower your MPGs. I doubt you are saving any money by running 87octane.

I am in Prescott Valley. The premium at Frys here was 3.499 in January. I just paid 4.099 which is less than in Phoenix.

Retarding timing on the same fuel, yes, you're almost gauranteed to lose MPG. Retarding timing to run a lower octane fuel, that's different. Whether or not you gain/lose MPG and/or save money, I've got no idea. Research would need to be done on the 350Z with a specific tune for us to know.
