God I love Faraday Cages. Actually, any car is a Faraday cage. Any metal box, for that matter, is a Faraday Cage to anything that is inside of it.
The way this works is, as the electricity moves from the top of the metal to the bottom of the metal as it reaches ground, electric fields of equal magnitude and opposite direction are created in the car to keep the status quo. Therefore, everything (and everybody) in the metal cage feels 0 net electric field and thus is unharmed.
It has nothing to do with the rubber. In fact, electricity from a lightning strike actually travles through the rubber.
