Only two I know of are the GTM cams and apparently Tomei makes cams(not100% sure). GTM cams run for 3k installed however, which Is very pricey...

GTM's are around 1300 which woulnd't be a bad price if you didn't ahve to pay 1700 for install. I also got quoted that same amount for install at other shops...

The labor cost more than the cams, FAIL in my book.

I'm not so sure if that is the case. Did you actually inquiry directly to them about their camshafts and you were told that?

I understand you not wanting to pay that amount for cams installed. 17 hours to install cams sounds like overkill( If you suspect the usual 100/hr labor rate. ) But 1300 for the cams themselves doesnt sound bad at all.

Do they pull the motor to install the cams? Thats the only reason I would think it should take that much time to do. I know pulling the whole front of the motor down is no easy task, but thats a lot of time for cams on any application.

Yea I think u havta pull the motor for a cam install.. But still. Dsn't take 17 hours. I've pull motors. If u don't BS around. To take it out and in is 4 hours at the most.. And cam install maybe 2. It's half a day at the most if thats ur main focus..

I wouldn't go that far, but pulling a motor would make the cam install fairly straight forward, so I would assume. I guess that makes sense then, they are figuring 4-5 hours each way for the motor and then the actual cam install time, probably more than one guy on the car too, so that adds up quickly. Remember, 2 guys on the car for one day, thats 16 hours right there.

Besides, performance work always comes at a premium, no book rates for stuff like that

I haven't really sat down and stared at the vq that closely to see if a engine pull is required. If that's the case I could see it being 17 hrs. Maybe it includes a retune also. I guess the price doesn't sound so insane then. Maybe it takes less time and that price includes changing all the fluids since they would have to be changed if ur pulling the motor. Suddenly the price doesn't sound so high lol.

I think instead of speculating, someone should just ask GTM and find out what is involved in installing their HR cams and what is the approximate labor time should they decide to have it installed at GTM or at by their own performance shop.

If I owned an HR and I were actually interested in their camshafts that is definitely what I would do instead of going off of hearsay and/or speculation.

I don't have the car yet, so i'm just looking at it from a mechanic's viewpoint. I've done cams on a couple cars, I used to do motor work on 300ZX's way back when, but I have yet to work on a 350Z. Just speculation for now.

Why don't you guys shoot a PM to Sam@GTM regarding cams and the labor, he'll answer all your questions.
