I am wondering why so many people advise against it.

I've driven many cars and if you have ever driven any other car.. The throws are extremely LONG and feel like butter. The Stock Z shifter is very short and notchy.. Not saying its the shortest or most notchy shifter I've used compared to those of my father's friends ferrari's and supercars but this shifter is SOLID and SHORT from the factory..

I am wondering why you would like to change it?

Ive driven a short shifter, and I love em. In fact im getting one for the Z also. Its not how low the **** is that I want, its the 20% or so decrease in the throw that is what Is really cool about it. Helps you make quicker shifts.

All the guys who are against the short shifter. Are you talking about the height, throw, or both? I'm only interested in a short shifter if the throw is shorter than OEM.

Funny.. I thought the stock shift throw was long and sloppy compared to my 01 S2K. With that said, upgraded to the B&M "street" version and took off that bowling ball of a shift *** & replaced with Nismo leather *** and have no regrets. No additional noise and a very clean short throw. Very nice upgrade IMO and not hard to do at all.

I suspect those with noisey SS kit's got the "race version" or have some other variable we are not aware of.

IMHO the z's shifter is in the middle of what I love/hate. My 240sx (and for those who've had them will agree) are extremely long and sloppy. But then on the other end of the spectrum, My brothers evo had an unknown short shifter in it and although the throws were short, it was very "numb". That's the only way I can describe it. The best shifter I had was in my WRX where I had shifter bushings and a shortshifter. It was absolutely perfect. The throws were precise and the gates were spaced perfectly. It slid into every gear without grinding and was a very solid and confident feeling. You had no doubt in your mind that it was in the right gear. I wish my Z felt the same but then again I know it's better than my old 240 so I can't complain that much. It could be worse. I wish I could try a local Z with an SS to make a firm decision on the matter. Just my $.02

My cousin has a 08 S2K and I know what you mean. In my opinion the S2K stock shifter feels better then my 350Z.

i don't believe the z's shifter is THAT short stock, its not even that smooth compared to lets say, an evo. ive owned both by the way, i actually installed the b&m shifter dispite what ive heard about it. havnt had ANY problems, easy install, and the shifter was a little stiffer, and throws, a little shorter. buts its not a dramatic night and day feeling. i still like it better then the stock shifter though. thats my .2 cents.

i think the people that are telling you how awesome the stock shifter is, bla yada yada, really have no references man, maybe drove a few cars briefly, but thats it! yes its a huge improvement from going from like a civic, or sentra, accord, what have you, but as far as "sports cars" go, its nothing great. so dont base what other people say with little exp in owning various sports cars. its not expensive to get, and you can always put the stock shifter back in if you dont like it.
