Putting a VLSD into a base 350z
Hey, I bought a VLSD from a guy that was parting his Z out and he only gave me the VLSD. Can I get away with buying the longer half shaft that is on the Z's with VLSD (or part number 38220+A) or do I need to purchase more parts to make it fit. Yeah I know this probably a noob question but I looked everywhere and I'm getting conflicting answers. The diagram I'm looking at is on this link:

You have to buy both half shafts. The install is a pain but I have done it. You will need to adjust the lash with the spacers and check the teeth placement on the ring gear. If you are not 100 percent confident in doing it I would sudjest you go to a shop.

I already purchased the VLSD from someone and the picture they had showed that they had the half shafts, but he didn't send them with the diff. So I kinda got screwed in the deal already or else I would have just waited and gotten the NISMO one if I knew this was going to happen. Go figure.
There are 3 unique stubs. Base models seem to use the same stub on both sides. The 2nd one is only on one side of the LSD cars, and the 3rd is on the opposite side.
Are you doing this install yourself?
If you're paying to get this thing put together, the price might be higher than buying a complete used VLSD pumpkin. The stub axles alone are close to 300 dollars, plus the parts mentioned in the install kit (even if it's not every piece) should put you near 400-500 dollars. Parts alone will put you close to the price of a complete used pumpkin.

there is no such thing as a VLSD button - there is VDC, which is totally different, or TCS, which again, is totally different
The VLSD, or an aftermarket LSD designed for a base, is your best, most cost effective solution overall by the time it's all said and done. The factory VLSD is a very very weak unit, and as they age and accumulate mileage, their lockup goes down even further.

I have found a couple OEM pumpkins around my area for $200-$500. I think thats a nice alternative to spending $1000+ on getting and installing an aftermarket LSD. Not to mention the install is as simple as swapping pumpkins, unless I am unaware of something else invlolved.
the price is cheap yes, but you still have no idea the condition of what you're buying - good luck either way. Price is not the only thing that determines a good deal
Again, thanks for the help.
