I think with a built block you should be running at least the Stage 2 turbos. With the smaller a/r GT28's, you will probably max out in the mid 500's before they run out of breath.

When I bought the TT kit I was aiming for a fast spool kit and stock block power.

but after the engine went kaboom I had to buy a built short block.

so you think mid 500's whp for 91 pump gas? what about C16?

Higher octane fuel will help you to make more power at a given boost level, but once you start raising the boost out of the turbos efficiency range, power will start to level off and you'll just be blowing super hot air into your engine, which is not a good thing.

500-550whp is max on a single Walbro on our Dyno Dynamics. This is roughly the same for pumpgas and C16.

Will let you know what our COMPLETELY BUILT HR motor does in our Time Attack 08 NISMO in about 30 more days.

While it has a lot more (= more $) than most would do to their HR in a build, it should be one of the strongest (hopefully THE strongest) in the country.

Clarification;

you blew the stock HR motor? if so, what psi / hp levels?

S & R Performance did a customers 2008 350Z running TT at 580rwhp which has been going strong for almost a year now. The motor was not "built" at all, straight up stock. From what I hear, the owner really beats on the car too. He did break something in his rear end recently though.

It's all about the tune!

I guess it's possible but I'd like to see a dyno sheet and some proof that it's been running for over a year.

Not sure how to get "proof" it's still running. Guess you will have to trust me :-)

Here is the post from S&R when they did this install. You can see the post date and finish date containing the dyno papers is over a year ago. It has a peak of 583rwhp due to the MAF sensors max, but they tuned it down to 540rwhp and that's what it has been running for over a year.

So as we talk about this car and between my last post and this one, someone posted in the florida 350z club forum asking who's car this http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/1668180911.html was on craigslist.

This is the car running 540rwhp on stock internals and it's for sale.

What was the cause? Was it overboost?

There are many variables that can cause this to happen and every HR motor seems to hold up differently.

Definitely interested in knowing this .. i have had my set up for more than a year now and have never had a problem and she has seen all levels of boost from 6.5 all the way to 10 which is about 518whp...

Usually when people blow their HR motor (or just about any motor they boost) it is one of the following.

1. Not tuned correctly. Too lean, too much boost, etc.
2. No "overboost" protection. This will sureley blow it up.
3. A ECU messing up. If you are running OSIRIS this may never happen but can with aftermarket ECU's. I just heard of a UTEC blowing up a boosted Z today!

My opinion is if you are going to either turbo a NA motor or run higher boost on an already turbo motor, spend a little extra money and do things to make sure you don't blow it up. For us this would be lower compression pistons (if you are going to run pump gas all the time) and head studs.

If you blow your motor up you will just spend more money and your car will be down longer than if you did it from the start. You spend $10,000.00 on a turbo setup, drop a couple thousand on getting the motor ready for what you are about to do.

If people did things right the first time, people wouldn't blame turbo manufactures or shops for blowing their motor up!

I know not everyone has a ton of money to invest in the motor but come on, if it took you 6 months to come up with $10,000.00, wait another month or so to come up with another 2k to spend on the motor so you won't blow it up. Nothing will upset you more than saving all that money up then blowing your motor and not knowing how you will come up with the money to repair it!

GAMERMODZ.COM speaks the truth =)

i wanted to wait a few down the line to just buy a built block but in the mean time i did buy a knock amp which has saved me a few time when because of over boost came into play and i immediately stopped what i was doing. It was one hell of an expensive electronic but very worth it because it serves more than one purpose.

Built block doesn't mean the motor won't blow. Go post that in the F/I forum and see what responses you get. I agree with Gamermodz on his first 3 reasons though.
