Default serial numbers on engine

I bought an engine on eBay. I finally received it ... damaged ( hole in oil pan, left throttle body plug broken )

looking over the engine looks like somebody has ground off the serial numbers. I'm wondering if there is maybe a hidden one I can find, under the intake mani possibly?

I'm worried this engine may be stolen ( why else would you grind serial numbers off? )

its quite possible its stolen. how much did you pay for it? at least you got it on ebay so you have protection. even if it is stolen not much anyone can prove with the serial number missing. i have an hr motor sitting at a freinds house that came out of a running z that he bought from a junk yard and it had it ground out also. haha my boy thought i could take his car from a revup to a hr and just not gonna happen so now he has a motor he will probably have forever.

do junkyards grind them down? the seller told his car brother-in-laws car was totaled. He said he removed it from the car has ~5k miles on it. He probably bought it back from the insurance company.

I was hoping there is one under the intake manifold or something so I could find out for sure if it's stolen or not.

I've also asked for the vin# and never received it..

Does it matter if it's stolen? As mentioned, you bought it off eBay so it's yours now.

Just keep the receipt of who/where you bought it from just in case someone ask.

Apparently someone does not want the motor traced.

Hole in oil pan? An internal component made the hole correct?

Most likely dropped the engine on the pan and punctured it. Worse case senario they hit it with one of the forks on the lift when transported/crated.

Not quite the worst case scenario........be much worse if a piece of an exploding rod cause the hole. If someone went through with the effort to grind the code off then it's more than possible it is from a stripped/stolen car.

Well you have to replace the pan anyway. May be a surprise inside. Like a box of Cracker Jacks.

It's the upper pan. If you don't know, don't post dumbass. I'm referring to the guy who said, "that's not the pan". There is an upper and lower oil pan, that is the upper. It is also clear the way the metal is broken, that the damage is outside in & not from the inside out. All that said, if you got the motor for a ridiculously cheap price then replace upper pan & be done with it. Swap your old one. It will also give you a look at the lower end, crank & rods. Either way I would do something quick cuz the motor is now exposed to air with no fluids. Sometimes they like to stick that way if left too long.
