Default Goodyear F1 GSD-3 or Toyo RA-1 ???

What's up all? I've had it with Nissan and the RE40s/Feathering. I'm going to get some new shoes for my Z. Please give me your thoughts on these two tires. I am going to run them on my stock 18"s, but I'm going for 255/45 in the rear and 245/45 in the front.

Also...please provide me with a good place to purchase these tires. Much thanks!

I have limited experience with the Toyo's, so I can only go with what I've heard.

I'd go with the Goodyear's based on that, I haven't heard many complaints at all from them. They handle great in the dry and they wear pretty good for a UHP tire.

Of course, www.discounttiredirect.com is the best place to buy your tires.

your leaning towards F1 base on one opinion?
I say Toyo RA1. Base on the old SCC testing, they were able to pull .92 g on the track with the RA1, compare with the stock .086.. some where around there. Now, you are back in netural with your decision making.

...I meant I have been leaning towards the Goodyears...prior to the first opinion on this thread. LOL! My research indicates that both these tires are great and obviously far superior to the stocks.

Thanks on the reply tranzholik. I only hit the drag strip a few times a year. Sounds like the Goodyears are better suited for my style of driving. The RAs have nice specs though.

I just got GSD3s put on my stock Rays and I love them. Drove around in the rain some and they had great traction. I dont know anything about the toyos but the GSD3s are really good for daily driving.

keep in mind, the toyos are probably lighter than the goodyears at a spot where it matters most (outside diameter of the rim)

Strife350Z- Are you saying that the Toyos are more resistant to the feathering or are you referring to the ability of the tire to rotate faster = more speed...or neither? Thanks!

close... i'm referring to the fact that rotational inertia has a significant impact on acceleration and everyone who's worried about wheel weight should be more concerned about tire weight... because if a 19" tire is 1 lb heavier than another tire, the impact is closer to 10 lbs per axle since it is furthest from the axis of rotation

toyo t1-s (street versio of the ra-1?) is the lightest street tire in the market today... but toyos in general are light-weight

(btw, to illustrate... cut out a cardboard disc, poke a pen through the center and spin the disc like a top by twisting the pen

NOW, take the pen cap and tape it to the outside edge of the disc.. spin the disc... it's much harder to do)

anyway, i personally run falkens and couldn't be happier... but my next set of tires with be toyos ... but be warned, I had the t1s on a previous car and they wear out pretty quickly

But the reason the toyo t1-s are lighter is because of the softer sidewall. Which means they'll absorb road imperfections better, but it also means that they'll handle worse. So what you will expirience is a delay between the steering input and car response.

I dont think the RA's are goin to be lighter.

RA's are R-compound tires (UTQG Treadwear 40)
T1-s (UTQG Treadwear 280)
GSD3 (UTQG Treadwear 280)

as u can see we are comparing apples with oranges.
and i totally agree with what nuff said.....i would have said the same thing.

I researched tire weights when I was shopping for my present tires. T1-S in my sizes were 24/28 pounds. Exactly the same size GS D-3s were 25.7/28.9 pounds. They are comparable, but I really like the wet performance of the Goodyears! The RA1s are really auto-x/road race tires. and the only weight data I found was that they weigh MORE than a comparable sized (13'14") T1S (per Miataspecracer.com).

You can't compare the two since the RA1 is an R-compound tire, designed specifically for road racing. I have T1S' as street tires, and they're pretty decent and much wider than the RA1s with respective sizes. I've been quite happy with the RA1s though as they are predictable, sticky, and have a very long lifespan for R-compounds.

I put 245/45/17 Goodyear F1 GSD3 on my 05 Z Enthusiast and they are one of the greatest wet weather tires I have ever used. I have 215/40/17 Toyo T1S on my 95 240SX and they are great in the dry and pretty good in the wet.

I prefer the Goodyears in the wet...They seem to be lacking a little bit in the dry. The toyo are awesome in the dry.
