I would normally agree with you on this one. However, there are circumstances where mixing the front and back can actually be useful, *especially* on a high performance car. One great example is a friend of mine here in my town with a 350Z. (His name is "Sosa" here on the boards.) He's actually running Toyo RA-1's in the front (super sticky r-compound), and T1-S's in the rear. This completely eliminated the Z's notorious understeer. He's a track junkie, and he said it was the best handling mod he had done to date.

I guess the trick is to just know what you're getting in to. If you're careful about how you mix them and are aware of the handling differences between the tires and what they'll do the response of your car, then I say go for it. But you're right that you don't want to mix them *****-nilly without considering the consequences first. And definitely never mix the left and right sides!

Well I also researched a bit about the Kumho ECSTA MX and all the guys on my Autocrossing forum are raving about them also!!! Anyone had any experience with these on their 350z?

one of the reasons i was going to mix the front 255 PS2's with rear 285 KDW2 was to help give more oversteer to the balance of the car in comparison to my 225 and 245 stock which are a closer with ratio to each other.

255 front and 285 rear will understeer more than 225 front and 245 rear. I know I can try messing with tire pressure and suspension settings too to help compensate. I don't think I can put my rear 350EVO sway bar on the stiffest setting (currently on middle) because the nismo exhaust probably won't let you because they're touching right now as is - won't be easy anyway from what I can tell.

I suppose I could try putting on a 265 KDW2 in front, but it'll just be heavier, will be slightly larger tire buldge which isn't as healthy, and the steering would be even more sluggish. You can't get 265/40/18's anyway. I really like PS2's and they don't have any good rear sizes for 18" that'll fit a 9.5" wheel and maintain the sidewall ratio between front and rear tires

I'm really not sure what "negative" thing will come from mixing tires unless you do some sort of crazy extreme, but i'm not really a tire expert either. How is it any different from choosing different tire sizes?

The only trick might be that you are mixing super sticky PS2's in the front with not-so-sticky KDWs in the back. Careful or you might get oversteer! But I'm sure it'll be fine. Like I said earlier, my friend put R-compounds in the front and regular tires in the rear, and it was perfect on stock suspension.
