I just bought two sets of rear rims. One set has 265/40DR's and the other 285/35 Pirelli P Zeros. That way no one can tell what I'm on and I never look miss matched.

 

Performance isn't going to be a issue because your still going to have the same circumfrence as the stock wheel. The weight is not noticable. The stock 18's have 245/45/18 in the rear. By going with a 19 you will go with a 35/19 tire so you speedometer will not have a problem. When talking about weight there is little difference. Your loosing 1inch of rubber and gaining 1 inch of rim. The weight is the same. But going with a light weight 18 like rays would obviously have 1 or 2 pound difference in rotational weight.

EXAMPLE: Stock: Rim & Tire weight = 22 Pounds
Aftermarket: Continental Sport Cont. & RPM 505 19" (9.5) 1 inch wider then stock=23Pounds

 

Okay, I found the rears I like; the Michelin PS2 305/30/19 on probably a 10.5" wheel. Sound about right?

As far as front tires, I was thinking of running a 245/35/19 on 9.5" wheels. Or should I go with 255's?

 

A 11" in the rear with a 30+ offset should fit NO PROBLEM with 305-315 wide. This is what i would do.

 

Does anyone know if Volk makes an 11 inch wide GT-7? Sorry for all the extremely newbie questions, I've honestly never even thought about tires/wheels until this weekend, and I've been researching as much as I can.

 

19x10.5 is the largest, according to their website.

 

Width does factor into overall diameter. Example: I was tired of how the stock setup 225/45/18 up front and 245/45/18 back was understearing so I went with 245/40/18 up front. This made the car much better balanced. Use this tire calculator http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html It'll save you alot of headache with the VDC.

 

Okay, I've finally made up my mind (i think) on gunmetal Volk GT-C's 19x9.5f and 19x10.5r, with Michelin 255/35/19 front and 305/30/19 rear. Now, LAST question before I order.....what offsets would be best for this setup?

 

that's really wide in the back.. you won't be able to lower it much at all. But a .75" drop shouldn't be a problem.

I'm running 10.5" TE37 now with 275/35 in the back. It rubs lowered 30mm with the Zeal coilovers.

So keep in mind that fat in the rear.. and even fender rolling may not help.

Offset is the key. With the stock track wheels, I'm running 275s front and rear with absolutely no rubbing problem (and my car is definitely on the very low side of tracked Zs). I know the Axis wheels group were running 305 Hoosiers in the rear with no problem, but you'll have to do some searching in the archives for the exact offsets. illZ, why are you running such a skinny tire on your 10.5" wheels? This suprises me since you're also an instructor for DEs... kind of a waste of weight on your corners for a wheel that wide for a 275...

 

How wide are the stock track wheels? Not 10.5" On a 9.5" rear I have more than enough room to lower it a lot. I've tried.. But the 10.5" rubs on the fender with any lateral g's over .40 ( i haven't changed the rear sway out yet)


a waste of weight?? the differnce is about .4lb. from 9.5" to 10.5" . It would be more of a "waste" from the added weight from wider rubber, IMHO.

if you are referring to drift events; it doesn't really much matter what I do with my Z , as I certainly don't compete or teach in it.

I'm not sure what the connection is between what I do with my personal vehicle and what I do for a living> LOL..

 

I would not do that at all if i were you. Most likely you will get a 23-24 offset in the back and you will rub with a 10.5 DO NOT DO IT unless you want serious rollage or tires sticking out fender. You will still have problems on bumps/turns

A 10.5-11 with a high 2x-30 offset in the rear and 305 in the rear should be absolutely no problem with probably no to minimum rollage of fenders.

Weight of the wheels/tires?? What?? PLEASE.. 550 whp and fat big rubber should be benefecial and nothing else.. ahem*traction

So Zexy, basically what your saying is, if I order a 30 offset all the way around I should be good with a 10.5 wheel and 305's? Because I don't want tires sticking out the sides and I don't want to have problems with handleing...

 

Exactly. If your offset is in the low 2x's then your tire(305) will be very likely to stick bit out past the fender and you will have to roll them a bit far and will have rubbing issues. With 275 as most people have it will be different because the skinnier tire will not hit the fender.

With a 10.5 wheel as you want and a 30 offset should be no problem with 305. Let me also state that this is based on reserach i've done fo the past year. I also have gone with a 10.5 inch rim in the rear. 275s are close to the fender but barely hit it. Some people even report rubbing with 275s in the rear with the same wheel! Just giving ya my 2cents though Good luck.
