I have a friend that works for mackin industries
(Rays Eng. /Volks U.S distributer) and there are alot of people I was told that are puting chemicals on the wheels for cleaning and it is screwing up the clearcoat.
USE ONLY SOAP & WATER to clean your Volks or any set of wheels.
Try not to use dish soap, I here it's bad for any type of clear coat

 

Thank you captain obvious this has been mentioned about 127X before, and anybody with 1/2 a brain wouldnt need this tip in the first place.....

 

Listen here partner, you would be surprised at how many people still use harmful chemicals to clean there wheels.

It's not a matter of having half a brain or not, some people that have never owned a set of high end quality wheels may not know about the negative effects of using chemicals on these wheels, due to the fact that they have used them in the past with other wheels.
So don't down anyone for making a mistake.

I have heard this before... and dont use anything but Car wash soap...

Before owning my first set of high end quality wheels, I would use dish soap on the wheels due to the constant soap suds dish soap produces and did not have a problem until I did the same to my Maya's and then noticed the clearcoat starting to haze a bit in the rear.

Any car wash soap that advertizes CLEAR COAT SAFE "SHOULD" be decent enough to use on the wheels

 

Actually, about every couple of weeks, some poor soul posts in the Detailing Forum that they screwed up their Volk or another brand of wheel using the chemical type cleaners.

Every spot remover, fabric cleaner or carpet shampoo made in the world has a warning on it telling you to test clean a inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn't fade, discolor, melt.... How many people actually read the instructions and do the test first? None. Face it, we don't bother reading instructions or manuals.

We need a banner in the Detailing Forum warning all newbies:

1) Don't use ArmorAll on your interior.
2) Don't use wheel cleaners on polished wheels.

 

I didnt have half a brain and used those chemical sprays. Sometimes you learn the hard way. All it needed was a metal polish to make it shine again. But it never really shined the same. Some people just dont know. This is a good thread. U'd be suprised how many newbs like myself are out there.

 

Hmm...I had VOLK GT-Cs on my Supra for 2 years and always used Meguiar's Hot Wheels on them...never noticed anything fading and whatnot. They were gunmetal with chrome/polished lips.

i agree with not using harsh wheel cleaners. when i had work wheels they(folks from work) told me to use a 50/50 water to simple green solution if needed.

 

Seriously has anyone noticed a brighter shine or cleaner wheel from using these "just for wheels" chemical products, that relatively speaking cost an arm and a leg, versus good ole carwash shampoo, clean water rinse and towel dry?

Unless you treat your wheels like a necklace (never washing until it tarnishes after a year) you shouldn't have to use these products IMO.

Nice write-up btw! I also use wheelwax, www.wheelwax.com on my Volks, awesome and safe product for Volk Wheels or clearcoated wheels!

 

At all the guys who got their panties in a bunch over a smart a$$ comment. This info should def be a sticky for the newbs, or people too lazy to clean with soap and water. Think for a minute guys-do you really think its clear coat safe if you can spray it on, wait 30 seconds, and it can remove most if not all of your brake dust from the past week?!

Am I supposed to be scared? Cant handle a little sarcasm?

 

Like they said above, many intelligent people on this site have ruined their wheels!

 

And like Dave said above-almost all cleaners say test on a small section before using. Most people dont follow directions, if they had, they would have just left a small spot and not ruined 1 or all of their wheels. Not so smart if you ask me....
