Default offset and "hi" or "low" question

what does it mean when a measurement says

19X9 LOW +45/+38/+31 114.3
19X9 HI +45/35/+20 114.3

I know what EVERY number on there means except "HI" and "LOW" (and some even say "Med")??

is it how deep the lip is. or what???

sorry for the stupid question

That is in reference to the pad height of the wheel. This is important when needing to clear brakes or upgraded brakes. A low pad means there is not much material on the pad and has a deeper lip than the same wheel with same offset that's a medium or high pad.

To determine which pad depth you'll need you must find out caliper clearances on your vehicles. They will tell you two things, pad height required as well as diameter of wheel required to clear the caliper.

Hope this helps. If you're looking at a wheel and want to know if it will clear I could probably find out. For the brembo upgrade on these vehicles you'll need to get the clearance measurements from Nissan/Infinity. With those measurements I can find out on the wheels.

later.

low-least clearance, deepest lip
medium - average
high-max clearance
super high - some even have this, don't expect a lip though.

WOW, thanks for the help.

I AM still a BIT confused though

since a "Low" should have less clearence, you would think that these wheels have a smaller OFFSET (less positive) and DEEPER DISH (lip), but from this example, it looks like the opposite????

in evey case, the "High" seems to have a smaller offset (deeper dish)??

19 x 7.5 LOW +53 / +48 / +43 5 114.3
HI +33 / +23 5 114.3

19 x 8.0 LOW +45 / +38 / +25 5 112 / 114.3 / 120
HI +33 / +23 5 112 / 114.3 / 120

19 x 8.5 LOW +45 / +38 / +30 5 112 / 114.3 / 120
HI +40 / +33 5 112 / 114.3 / 120

19 x 9.0 LOW +45 / +38 / +31 5 112 / 114.3 / 120
HI +45 / +35 / +20 5 112 / 114.3 / 120

19 x 9.5 LOW +45 / +38 / +31 5 112 / 114.3 / 120
HI +45 / +33 / +13 5 112 / 114.3 / 120

19 x 10.0 LOW +45 / +38 5 114.3
HI +18 5 114.3

It's all kinda relative on the offsets and widths of each pad that you are comparing. Put it this way, if you have two wheels of the same width and offset, but one has a lower pad than the other. The lower pad should have the deeper lip.

Therefore it you were able to compare a low pad wheel that's 8" wide with 0 offset and compared it the same width wheel in a high pad. The material to make that high pad while have to come from spacing on the front of the wheel. Hope that makes sense. Therefore the lip on the outside will be smaller.

Pictures can be deceiving because you don't know which offsets you are comparing in which widths for what pad heights.

i.e. the 19,9 in both high and low pad come in a +45 offset. Therefore, from simple math, the low pad should have a deeper dish. The offset will vary on how their barrels are spaced apart. Some are quarter inch differences, some are half inch, etc.... Then with different pad heights you can further acheive a wider selection in offsets. This pertains to multipiece wheels.
