Default 5Zigen FN01R-C or MB Competitions?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a set of inexpensive but still fairly lightweight 17" wheels for track days, auto-x and time attacks. I'm looking to get either a set of 17x9 5Zigen FN01R-C's or MB Motorsports Competitions. The FN01R-C's are about 18 pounds with a 35mm offset. The Competitions are 20.5 pounds with a 27mm offset (I guess also available in 17mm). Any recommendations?

I know that quite a few guys are using the Competitions with no issues. I am a bit concerned that the 275/40R-17 tire that I want to use will rub the upright in the front if I get the FN01R-C's due to the more positive offset.

Also looking for a street class tire. I am leaning toward the new Falken RT-615 in 275/40R-17. Anyone have good experience with this tire?

First off, you can get the FN01RC in 17x9 +15, which will fix any rubbing problem.

I have both the MB Motorsport Competitions, and a set of the MB Motorsport Weapons. The Weapons are a tad bit lighter and easier to find.. the Competitions have been out of stock forever, and/or sell fast when they are in stock.

Either one will work fine.. it's just a matter of price. I've seen plenty of FN's break at track events (hitting rumble strips), and any of the MB Motorsport wheels are gonna be cheaper.

A P275/40R17 with a 17x9 +27 will fit perfect, just for reference.. here's the MB Weapons in the above sizes (+27 w/275 tire) on my car. The Weapons come in silver as well.

If I had to voice an opinion, I'd say the MB Motorsport Weapons are probably your best bet.

i have a set of 18x8+30 weapons sitting in the basement, love to get rid of them. They are powdercoated silver, but came out gray in some light after the clear coat. Make good track wheels, could be recoated. But youre probably looking for 17s.

Ouch! That sounds ugly... Is that because of the thinner spokes, or did they break somewhere else?

Are you sure that the Weapons are lighter than the Competitions? In pictures, it looks like the Weapons are just 7-spoke versions of the Competitions, so I would have expected the Weapons to be heavier (unless the spokes are actually thinner).

But youre probably looking for 17s.
Yes, looking for 17s. I already have four sets of 18 wheels!

I'm running the 17x9 +27 MB Motorsports Competition on 275/40/17 Avon Tech R's. Plenty of brake clearance and absolutely no rubbing issues. Contrary to what someone else said above, the Competitions are a tad lighter than the Weapons, according to specs on their own website.
