effectiveness of drag radials?

Default effectiveness of drag radials?

Ive been doing a lot of reading and it seems like drag radials are a VERY effective mod, probably the best bang for the buck, in terms of linear acceleration improvement for the Z. So I'm wondering, how wide of a tire do I need? Here are the details to base the decision on :

Mods :

Intake
Plenum Spacer
2.5" x-piped (otherwise true dual) exhaust
High Flow Cats
Headers
ECU Reflash
3.9 Final Drive
Clutch
Flywheel

Now my current rim setup is the factory Ray's track rims, 8.5" rear size, and I only really need drag radials in the back, so will 265 drag radials give me the traction I need? Or do I need to invest in some wider rims in the rear, like 18X10? I'm just not sure how effective radials are. Thanks.

265'S will definitely get you the traction you need. I use 265/40/18's and i have turned a 1.75 60ft as my best 60ft. You'll want to run them around 18-20psi at the track but judging by traction loss you should be able to dialin your tire psi.

I would love a 1.75 60ft time...it's my answer to an 11 sec. pass, but I'm scared of my axels breaking if I put drag radials on it.

+1 on the BFG 265/40 18, they will look great on your track rims as well....

When its time for your axles to go it will go. Mine have not busted and I drag and launch all the time. My friend only has about 14k on his 03 and he busted his going into 2nd at the drag strip and he has a Vortech so I wouldn't worry to much. Just try to slip the clutch out slowly and when it grabs let it go while accelerating the same amount of throttle. I launch at 5k and it hooks when Im on 15psi in the tires. Unfortunately I kept missing a gear when my 60 ft was that low or i'd be in the 11's already.

so with the power I have it wouldn't be THAT much better to go with say 18X10 rear wheels with 285 or 295 drag radials?

oh and also how many miles can i expect out of a set? not going to the drag strip very often, just spirited driving around town...

You won't need any that large for your power or even more power. Maybe once over 500 you should get away from 265's. My guess.

I guess if your camber is near correct maybe 2-3k miles maybe 4. I get about 2-3 trips to the drag strip out of mine. But Im doing good long burnouts.

ouch that tire wear sucks! i guess thats what you pay for performance... Is it a common thing to get a seperate set of just 2 rims that you put drag radials on in the rear and just pop those on when you want to go out and have fun? im sure some lightweight 17's or something would be really cheap, i dont know though

I would think so and thats what i did. However not as light, I got the kazera 18x 9 or whatever they are. With air in tire they are 50lbs. vs. Volk Te's or Le's around 48 and my 5zigens at 48 so they aren't to bad.
