Default TPMS questions

This may be a stupid question, but if I'm going to be changing the tires, do I have to do it at the dealer so the tire pressure monitoring system still works, or can I have them changed anywhere? And is the system compatible with any type of tire? Thanks.

You don't *have* to take them to the dealer, the only advantage would be that if they did get damaged, then it would be under warranty. Any competent shop will be able to change tires and not damage the TPS sensors.

They do work with any tire. The only issues with them are when changing wheels because they won't fit some wheels.

Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping they'll change them for free when I take delivery on the car. Otherwise if they try to shaft me, I'll take it elsewhere.

I'm sure if you were buying NISMOs from them they would change them out for free. Otherwise, they're probably gonna need some $$$ from ya'.

If it was me, I'd have the dealer do it even if they charge. I'd also pay to have an alignment done with the new tires.

I'm assuming you have a competent dealer.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'd like to have the dealer do it ideally, unless they really try to rip me off. I'm waiting for a reply from them; I'll post what they're asking when I get it to see if it's fair or not.

Alright guys, my saleswoman told me they would charge me they're hourly labor rate of $105/hr. Does it take longer than an hour to have this done, or is there any way to agree on a price before they do it? I've never taken a car to a dealer to have work done that wasn't under warranty, so I don't know what to expect (aside from getting ripped off).

You can expect them to take at least an hour. Spending $100 or more to dismount 4 tires and sensors, remount 4 tires and sensors and balancing would not be too surprising.
