255/40/R17 on stock 17" wheels for autox?
Well, I'm sick of trying to autoX on my goodyear F1 GS-D3s, because it's killing my tires and the wobbly sidewalls are killing my turn-in. I think it's time for some dedicated race rubber. I can pick up a set of stock 17" wheels with some azenis 215s on them for pretty cheap, but the tires are about to go. I thought about getting some 18" wheels, but I don't want to spend the money; I'm trying to prepare my car for BSP next season on a pretty limited budget, so I think that money would be better spent elsewhere. So here is my question: Would a 255/40/R17 falken azenis RT-615 on stock 17" wheels work? I realise the wheel-tire diameter would get smaller, but that's not such an issue because these would purely be for racing; not worried about speedometer calibration issues! I'm wondering if a 255 tire would be too wide to fit on the stock wheels. What do you guys think?
According to the fitment guide on Falken's web site the 255 40 17's need a rim between 8.5 and 10 inches, being that factory 17's are 7.5 front and 8 rear, it isn't recommended. You could fit the 245 45 17's on both front and back though.
I have 2 sets of stock 17" rims. I took the 4 rear rims and mounted 255s on them and use this set for track events and used the front 4 rims with the standard 225/235 tires for daily driving. Works just fine. My next set of tires for the track will be 275's which will also work.
The folks running 17s seem to be using 275/40-17s... Kumho 710 is the weapon of choice... and they say the tires fit on the stock 17" wheels. Don't bother going 18s, I run B-Stock and if I were allowed to, I'd run 17s. For BSP, you are probably going to want to go with 17 X 9.5 wheels... and the 275/40-17s will still be your best bet with that set-up as well.

Well, if money wasn't an issue I'd buy some real lightweight 17" wheels and good tires. But, I can't afford both, which is exactly why I want to use the 17" stock wheels. But 275/40/17s on the stock 17s, huh? I'll check it out... that size seems pretty wide for 7.5/8" wide wheels though.
Money's always a factor, but there are several 17 X 9.5 wheels that are quite affordable... and will save your Goodyears for normal driving.

The stock 17s are narrow wheels, but that's the size tire (275/40-17), the guys with 17" wheels are running. So if there isn't $532 in the budget for some 9.5s, the stockers should do fine... Reference:
