Default 16" wheels?

I'm looking at wheels for next season (autocross) and I've considered buying 16" wheels, if I can find a set wide enough. I figure the smaller diameter would give me a little boost in acceleration (these wheels would only be for racing, not for the street, so the speedo miscalibration doesn't matter). But I'm wondering if they would clear stock brakes? It seems like the 17" wheels have a decent gap for clearance, and they are on the thick side anyways. Has anyone tried this?

MB Motorsports 16x8 competition, offset is +25. What do you think wheel gurus?

If you're considering weight, those 20.5 pound wheels are not the answer.

If the 17 wheel takes a 50 series tire, then I guess that a 16 inch wheel would take a 55 series tires. You might post a question in autocross, but I think that a 55 series tire is too much sidewall.

I was thinking a 265/45/R16 v710 as far as rubber goes. The reason I was thinking 16s is to get the outside diameter smaller, for more acceleration. Like putting on a 3.9 final drive. I didn't even look at the weight, but that's a good point.

Personally I would go with 17's. You can find them just as light as 16's and the sidewall would be a tad shorter and stiffer. My vote is for 17's.
