Lightbulb Black wheels on my Silverstone...

Well, those Black Racing wheels sure are ugly, maybe a bit too ugly. The EVOs are growing on me, but I think I'm going to keep looking. Maybe spending a bit more is in order.

this is a very bad idea ... just in case you didn't know most wheels are heat treated to make them stronger and powder coating uses enough heat to anneal metal thus making the wheel very soft ... you'll probably bend the wheels just trying to get the tires mounted on them

while you are correct in some ways, the degree of failure you are talking about could be a little off. I am very familiar with the powder coating process and the amount of time and temperature typically used, will NOT cause the type of failure you are talking about with most Aluminum alloys. I am NOT as familiar with the exact materials used in wheels (so maybe I am wrong), but I have had many products powder coated for motorcycles (motocross bikes) and moutain bikes, and BMX bikes, withOUT failure. The baking process just gets the metal hot enuf to allow the powder to sort of "melt" onto the surface. Many HIGHEND mountain bikes and road bikes are built, heat treated, THEN Powder coated (as an option),k polished or painted with traditional paints (in other words the heat treatment with teh powder coating process is NOT a variable important to the structure of the product, either positively or negatively) which involves another heat treating process.

Maybe a problem that you would see is if, the metal is dramatically different in material than the products I am familiar with (and since the wheels are probably a cheap cast wheel, vs a forged product), it could have some unexpected results, saying that, I would elect to traditional painting for the wheels VS powdercoating, just for the saftey factor.

droidekaus, did you ever see the SCC where they tuned the enthusiast Z? it had the black racing rims on it and it actually looked good. it's hard to get an accurate picture of what they really look like until you see them on the car.
